First Edition. Publisher's Presentation Copy. Illustrated with 28 supeb colour plates and a number of head-pieces throughout, all by Edmund Dulac. 4to, publisher s original olive cloth very generously decorated in gilt and blind in pictorial and figurative designs over the entire spine and upper cover, with gilt decorated endleaves. A pleasing, clean and handsome copy with only light age mellowing. The plates are especially bright with all captioned tissue guards present. A SCARCE AND HANDSOME FIRST EDITION. "The Outlook" and "The Bookman" both commented that "the book thinking people will say with grace.sometimes Dulac s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them." Indeed, Dulac brings Poe s genius to life with his worlds of swirling furies, forlorn moonlit maidens, and eerie fairy castles that seem to stumble away from reality into the edge of dream---or nightmare. One of Dulac s most evocative creations.

Signed limited edition, number 301 of 750 copies signed by the illustrator. Dulac's illustrations for The Bells are "more uniform in mood and style than groupings for almost any other book of his to this time. Although water colours, they are overstreaked with gilt in some cases, crayon in others, to produce rich haunting effects. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout" (Hughey) A contemporary review in The Outlook noted that "Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them". Hughey 29. Large quarto. Original white vellum, lettering and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, new ties. Frontispiece and 27 colour plates with printed tissue-guards, tinted illustrations throughout. Some light soiling to binding as usual, browning to free endpapers: a near-fine copy.
