Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. Morse, Joe (illustrator). First Edition, Second Impression. New copy in Folio Society eco-wrapping, as received directly from the publisher. First published by Folio Society in 2015, this is the second printing of 2023, in a new binding. As extraordinary as the character who inspires its title, 'Beloved' is seminal both in its stylistic achievements and its searing depiction of the lives of African Americans under slavery. It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988, and in 2006 the 'New York Times' ranked it the nation's best work of fiction of the past 25 years. At its daring, startling heart lies the image of infanticide; an act of paradoxical violence by which an escaped slave, Sethe, saves her child from a life like her own. Unnamed, the baby is buried in a grave marked 'Beloved', but her time among the living has not drawn to an end. With an introduction by award-winning writer Russell Banks, and featuring Joe Morse's striking illustrations, this is a beautiful collector's edition of an essential novel. The book is quarter-bound in blocked red cloth with metallic paper sides featuring a design by the artist who has also contributed a frontispiece and 8 other colour illustrations. Silvered top edges. 304 pages. 9'' x 6¼''. Housed in a blocked slipcase. Stock images used for this new copy. Additional photos available on request or these may be viewed on my eBay listing when live. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed-for, and insured.
