Hardcover, 108pp. English/ Dutch (NL) edition. Signed by the artist. *Pristine copy ISBN 9789072828200. The paintings by Bert De Beul (? 1961, Gent) may actually be called figurative - we recognise a face, a bridge, a house - although the images sometimes seem to withdraw in front of our eyes and to dissolve into hazy coloured patches. This pendulum motion between figuration and abstraction is explained by the fact that the artist does not put reality as such on the canvas, but rather his memories and associations. Moreover, this personal and subjective relationship to the subject causes a shift in meaning: the concrete, almost banal object becomes a thrilling and mysterious image. 0 g.
