This is the first one-volume edition in the Piccadilly Novels series. This was Collins's last novel, left incomplete by him, but with comprehensive notes which were used by Walter Besant to finish the book. The plot of the novel is based on a real life insurance fraud in which the living claimant arranged for a dead body to be identified as himself.
