Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Orchard Keeper, Suttree & Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. First printing of the omnibus edition by Quality Paperback Bookclub, which is a division of Vintage. This edition is very hard to track down in its own right. This is the only known signed copy. . This copy signed to Blanco under the first title in the collection, The Orchard Keeper. This is quite a unique item not only because it was very rare for Cormac to sign a softcover volume, but also because this edition is not as easy to find as the other softcover editions. Also take into account, this edition contains Cormac s (for some) magnum opus, Blood Meridian, as well as two of his other most desirable titles! An absolutely fabulous piece and very unique. I wonder how many of these exist signed? . Book in VG condition with some soiling throughout especially to the text blocks. There is a small closed tear to the bottom left front wrap, which has a small piece of tape to the verso. There is very little wear to the spine and very little bow to the book as typically seen with a large volume. It s likely been read sparingly, but I can take more photos if needed. . Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Cormac McCarty signed book set of his first 6 novels. The story behind them is pretty cool too. Cormac had wandered into a bookstore in Tucson Arizona called Coyote s Voice Books. In her letter of provenance for all 6 volumes, the owner described him as a southern gentleman, and who purchased several books on psychological conditions (was he researching The Passenger/Stella Marris?) She was aware that he did not do book signings but nevertheless asked him if he would sign all of the books that they had in stock at the time. She said that he obliged her and signed all of the books he was presented with! Not only do I love these because it s the first 6 books all signed (the toughest of the McCarthy novels to acquire signed) but the story gives you an alternate narrative to the one that is told most often about McCarthy; He hates to sign books. She describes his transportation on that day as an old light blue pickup truck and he was dressed like a Texan, wearing a leather bomber jacket and he was polite and rather shy. All but Suttree and All the Pretty Horses are first printings of the Vintage paperback editions (Suttree 8th, ATPH 4th). All are in Fine or Very Nearly Fine unread condition with simply the foxing to the pages due to age and cheap paper. No toning to the wrappers as commonly seen. . First British edition of the author's classic fifth novel. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Cormac McCarthy on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket illustration by George Sharp. Uncommon signed. "Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). McCarthy can only be compared with our greatest writers, with Melville and Faulkner, and this is his masterpiece" (Michael Herr).

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition. First UK edition, first printing, octavo size, 345 pp., signed by Cormac McCarthy. Cormac McCarthy (born Charles Joseph McCarthy, Jr., in 1933), is acknowledged by many as one of the greatest contemporary American writers. His first novel, "The Orchard Keeper", won a 1966 William Faulkner Foundation Award for notable first novel; "All the Pretty Horses" would win the National Book Award in 1992, and "No Country for Old Men", conceived as a screen play (and later turned into a novel) won four Academy Awards. He would eventually author twelve novels, three short stories, five screenplays and two plays. This the first UK edition of McCarthy's "Great American Novel"; it was McCarthy's fifth novel and although it received only lukewarm praise upon publication, it is now viewed as his magnum opus. The first UK edition scarce signed; as of this writing, we see no copies online. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full red textured paper over boards, white lettering stamped onto the spine, copyright page with full number line, simply signed "Cormac McCarthy" on the sectional title page in black ink; octavo size (8 5/8" by 5 3/8"), pagination: [i-viii] [1-2] 3-337. The unclipped dust jacket with a wrap-around illustration (by George Sharp) of a horseman riding over a landscape with a blood-red sky behind him, black and red lettering, review blurb on the bottom of the front panel, short summary of the book and review blurbs on the front flap, short author bio on the back flap with original price of GBP 11.95 at the bottom. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the paper over the boards clean, the white on the spine not worn or flaked, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the head of the spine with a slight bump extending for about an inch at the very top of the front board, tail of the spine very gently bumped, corners gently bumped but not rubbed, interior pages lightly toned. The unclipped dust jacket also near fine, clean, not sunned (the reds on the spine as deep as on the panels), with very minor edgewear. ___PROVENANCE: We acquired this book from a collector who purchased it from an ABAA member who confirmed the signature, details available upon request. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: NEAR FINE. Dust Jacket Condition: NEAR FINE. First Edition. SIGNED and inscribed by Cormac McCarthy on the title page to Gyula Visnyei, aka Juli Veee, the Hungarian-American soccer player. Cormac faltered in the spelling of 'Gyula', one of the main reasons Juli tended to ask authors to stick with 'Juli V' in inscriptions. 337pp. Red paper over boards backed in red cloth, red and gilt stamped spine lettering. One miniscule spot to top edge, else FINE; very small nick to tail of DJ spine, exceedingly crisp and bright otherwise. McCarthy's fifth novel, first western, and first and only written in the full freedom of his mature style. Upon publication a few critics saluted its genius but 1985 America didn't have much appetite for such a blatantly grotesque apocalypse of the American drive West; Ahearn states only 1,500 copies sold (others have claimed 1,883) of 5,000 printed in the first edition, the rest marred with the dread felt remainder pen. Its commercial flop was a failure of the reading public not seen since Moby Dick, whose style and content Blood Meridian is often compared to. Following the success of the Border Trilogy, readers returned to Blood Meridian finding in it the purest distillate of McCarthy's powers, a perfectly harnessed thunderstrike which he had the wisdom to never attempt again. 'And another thing,' to quote Mark Hime, 'Blood Meridian has all the charm of cutting into a loaf of bread and finding a dead mouse, so don't take a shower before reading this book, because you are going to need a long one afterwards.'.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Cormac McCarthy (1981-83) correspondence archive of five letters to fellow writer Lawrence (Larry) Millman, multiple award-winning travel writer and editor of Agni Review. Written on the eve of the publication of his masterpiece Blood Meridian with fascinating content revealing McCarthy's sense of humour, state of mind, political leaning, the misery of being a writer and much more. McCarthy's work-in-progress which would become Blood Meridian (1985) is directly mentioned. One typed and four handwritten letters, all signed by McCarthy. With four original mailing envelopes. 1) The first letter from Jan 81 is typed, one page A4 size, signed with 'Cormac'. McCarthy states that he is reading Millman's book, and that it was send to him by his sister taking it as an omen. He writes that the piece which Millman saw in Tri-Quarterly [issue 48 Spring 1980 where a section of Blood Meridian called 'The Scalphunters' was published pp. 15-28] was from a novel he was working on at the time and McCarthy agrees to find another cohesive section whih Millman could publish in his magazine. 2) The second letter from June 1981 is entirely handwritten and is of astonishing content. After the opening lines McCarthy writes "I do indeed know the story of the motel shooting and I'd just like to say that the kind of nitpicking criticism it received in the yankitized press is just what we down here dont need. Sure, the guy made a mistake. What the yankee press failed to mention in every account was that he said he was sorry. Not only that, but he expressed his willingness to make restitution in any reasonable & mutually agreeable fashion to the families of both of the dead people. No mention of that. Oh no. And sure the couple that were mistakenly gunned down were on their honeymoon. So what? Does that make it worse? Was he supposed to know that? Big play in the DY press about that little fact all right. Jesus, Larry, are people not entitled to mistakes any more? You'd think he'd done the whole thing deliberatley. And the damn bellboy should have been fined at least twice what he was fined, in my opinion. I think maybe even fifty dollars might not have been too severe. It was damn careless of him & he should be taught a lesson. Anyway, we sure as hell dont need a bunch of damn Yankee nitpickers jumping up and down & chortling over what they see as decadence of the old southwest. As far as I am concerned those folks had better on to their own cucumber patch. Anyway, I'm glad to get this off of my chest. It needed to be said & I've said it. All the best, Cormac." 3) In the third letter, also handwritten Cormac apologizes "about the motel incident business" and stresses that it was meant as a joke and the story "was absolutely outrageous". McCarthy is delighted about Millman's forthcoming novel. Further on 'the mosquitoes I can do without. I was in Quebec in May & they darkened the sun at noon like passenger pigeons. I really despise being sucked on by insects. We had about 95 hounds with us & they were just about exsanguinated by the time we got out of there. The natives said the 'real mosquito season' was just on the way. Cormac goes on further to recommend the essay collection The Geography of the Imagination by Guy Davenport before enquiring about the summer and suggest a meeting in the New York area. in the postscript he congratulate Millman on his novel and adds "Just have to wear the bastards down". 4) The fourth letter was send together with the piece for Agni Review. Cormac stresses that no apologies are necessary if the piece is not liked. ".since you commented on my books with such discernment as a writer you will know that anything less than delirious enhusiasm is faint praise. I thought I'd have to send you a section of the book. Chapter 10 actually [of Blood Meridian]." We welcome direct contact and have more images and content to share. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "for Al Lowman, all best wishes, Cormac McCarthy". Lowman was a respected Texas historian who spent his life studying and sharing stories of the American Southwest, the setting for McCarthy's most celebrated works, including No Country for Old Men, All the Pretty Horses, and his brutal masterpiece and quintessential Old West novel, Blood Meridian. McCarthy grew up in Tennessee and Appalachia, where many of his early works are set. His first trip to Texas in 1970 inspired him to write Blood Meridian, and in 1974 he moved to El Paso to immerse himself in the history and geography of the region. The subsequent work was "as close to history as novels generally get, drawn in sometimes verbatim tones from memoirs, chronicles, eyewitness testimony" (Mitchell). McCarthy was a notoriously reclusive author, but it is likely he and Lowman met during the course of McCarthy's research. Lowman (1935-2013) curated the special exhibits and catalogues at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio and served as president of the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas Folklore Society, and the Book Club of Texas. He was a member of the Grolier Club and the Philosophical Society of Texas, and he published a number of book, including Printing Arts in Texas (1975), "the best history of fine printing in Texas" (Jenkins), and This Bitterly Beautiful Land: A Texas Commonplace Book (1972), with an introduction by Carl Hertzog, El Paso's master printer and an internationally renowned book designer. The year before his death, Lowman wrote a love-letter to the Texas of his youth: "My earliest memories are of Aladdin lanterns, battery-powered radios, treadle sewing machines, and mud roads. The fecund black earth extended from our house in all directions. Four hundred years before my time Cabeza de Vaca saw part of Nueces County and described 'vast and handsome pastures, with good grass for cattle. it strikes me the soil would be very fertile were the country inhabited and improved by reasonable people.' Nothing waits more patiently than the earth itself." John Jenkins, Basic Texas Books, 1983; Al Lowman, "Some Recollections of Defining Events", First Timers and Old Timers: the Texas Folklore Society Fire Burns On, 2012; Lee Clark Mitchell, "A Book 'Made Out of Books': the Humanizing Violence of Style in Blood Meridian", Texas Studies in Literature and Language, vol. 57, no. 3, 2015. Octavo. Original red quarter-cloth, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in metallic red, red paper sides. With dust jacket. Title page and facing page illustrated with map of New Mexico. Very faint foxing to top edge: a fine copy in fine, unclipped jacket.

First edition of the author's classic fifth novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author in the month of publication on the front free endpaper, "For John Sheddan At Saxon Oaks Manor In April of 1985 All the best, old friend Cormac." The recipient, John Sheddan was a close friend of McCarthyâs. âSome of McCarthyâs friends claim that the character Gene Harrogate (a character in McCarthyâs novel, Suttree), or at least his watermelon venture, was based in some way on John Sheddan, âscholar, schemer, hustler, melon paramourâ (Gibson 23)â¦.However in a letter of response to Gibsonâs article, Knoxvillian Buzz Kelley writes that Sheddan was âprobably McCarthyâs best and most loyal friend from the Knoxville crowd,â holder of two masterâs degrees, and not at all âa violator of vegetables nor one to fornicate with fruitsâ (Dianne C. Luce, Reading the World: Cormac McCarthyâs Tennessee Period). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. Jacket design by Richard Adelson. Jacket painting by Salvador Dali. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Next to the dedication copy, this is the best association possible.
