There is a tipped in statement on the copyright page about a condensed version of the novel being published in The American Magazine under the title The Red Bull. 3 page excerpt promoting the forthcoming Wolfe novel Too Many Cooks in the rear. Light soiling to the to the spine and rear cover. There is toning to the paste downs and FEPs, mostly near the spine. The binding is tight and the text block is clean. The original DJ ($2.00 price on the front flap) is in fair shape. It appears to have been trimmed by about 25" in total. The rear panel is soiled with a .5" x .5" v-chip at the top left and .75" x .75" chip at the bottom left. There is a 1.75" x 1" v-chip at the top of the spine that runs from the middle of the spine .75" into the front panel. There is a 2.5" closed tear at the bottom of the rear spine hinge. There are tapes scrapes on the spine near the top (through SAR of Caesar) and bottom (through RAR of Farrar and HART of Rinehart) at the bottom. The front panel & flap are completely separated from the spine. There are ghosts of celo tape repairs on the inside of the DJ but the tape is no longer present. There is a 1" by .375" scrape at the bottom left of the DJ. However, in spite of this rather extensive catalogue of flaws ,the front panel illustration and spine actually present rather well. A very good copy of an early Stout classic with a flawed but reasonably presentable original DJ .
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition in very good condition. Oxford Rental Libraries stamp on front endpaper and evidence of removal of likely a library checkout list on the verso of the back cover. No other library markings. The jacket is in poor condition and has been lined by a misguided former owner with stiff paper. Despite flaws a relatively nice copy of an uncommon book and jacket.
