Map covers Egypt (part), Alexandria, Rosetta, Damietta, Ismailiya, Port Said, Suez Canal, Cairo, Helwan, Pyramids of Abusir and Saqqara, Medina, Minia, Asyut, Tahta, Ekhmim, Wady Natrun, etc. Slightly darkened edges with some occasional foxing in margins. Top edge of sheet is bumped and has slightly heavier foxing but sheet is otherwise clean and crisp. Item Type: Map. Reynolds-Ball gives an account of Egyptian life and monuments from a late 19th-century perspective. Its pages describe Cairo and Alexandria, the Suez Canal, and major ruins and landmarks across the Nile region. Highlights include discussions of the Temple of Giza, Luxor, the Sphinx, and the Tombs of the Mamelukes. The statue of Rameses II and the Obelisk of Heliopolis are also pictured and discussed. The book includes twenty engraved illustrations and is bound in decorative cloth with a gilt-stamped pyramid on the front cover. Fine. Binding secure, spine and cover gilt clear and bright; cloth shows only minor handling wear. Text block clean, with only slight age toning confined mostly to page edges. Beveled edges, red silk ribbon marker. A couple of pages badly cut (does not affect text), spine quite faded. Nice example of the binder's art. Very good condition.

Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine/Near Fine. First Edition. A very very nice copy of this travel book. The book itself is in fantastic shape. The binding is tight and the gilt lettering and top edge is bright. There is a gift inscription on front end paper in pencil but even that is interesting as it is from Mrs Poebe A. Hearst, mother of William Hearst, to Mrs W.H. Cushing of the Squaw Valley Cushings. It is dated May 4, 1900 from San Francisco. Book is in vinyl dust jacket with gilt letting at spine. Lettering is bright and the only flaw to jacket is light edge wear and a few very small, light stains on front. And this comes in the original slip case, which is scarce to come by and in nice shape with only light edge wear, rubbing and chipping of paper at spine. All in all, a very nice find. Scarce, with only two institutional copies listed on OCLC First Search -- at Harvard and National Library of Israel. (Later editions are more commonplace, but obviously are significantly different as well. The publisher is still in business, we believe.) Dating based on a number of things. Among them, Heliopolis, founded in 1905, is referred to as a new suburb. w12mo. 19 by 13 cm. [11], [4] pp. Large folded city map mounted to inside rear cover. Nine plates, not included in pagination. Map, which is printed with color, measures 56 by 45 cm when fully open. Five plates with b/w photos, one or two on the glossy page. Four are mounted color images, or five, if one includes the front cover. These color illustrations are photos which have been enhanced in a way to suggest painting. Stiff wraps. Semi-hardbound. Card for boards. Cloth spine.

Edition originale, complète des 6 planches. / Grobert (1757-1814) took part in the French campaign in Egypt as a brigade chief and gave with this work one of the first detailed descriptions of pyramids of Giza and of Cairo.
