Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2017. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Camerton Slope: A Story of Mining Life HE writer of the following pages was reared in a mining community, and at an early age entered the mines as a driver. What is re corded in these chapters may serve as the token of his abiding sympathy and true, brotherly feeling for all who toil in any capacity in the darkness and danger of underground life. After a somewhat extended acquaintance with men in various departments of life and labor, the author wishes here to record the fact that he has found no more genial and lasting friendships, no truer, sturdier types of manhood, no loftier ideals of pure Christian character, than among his chums and associates of auld lang syne. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Item Description: Cranston and Curts, Cincinnati OH, 1893. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. This would appear to be a first edition, but I don't know how to verify this. The publisher is given as both Cranston and Curts of Cincinnati and Hunt and Eaton of New York, with the Ohio publisher's insignia on the spine and a copyright statement naming them as well. The boards are an olive brown in color, decorated with a floral pattern in black and the title in gilt. The 320 pages of text are followed by 5 pages of advertising for books by one Annie S. Swan and the very prolific Carlisle B. Holding. The book is withdrawn from a library; the signs of this consist of the remnants of a call number on the spine and a partially removed charge slip on the back endpaper. Someone has scriblled on the rear flyleaf in pencil, but otherwise the book is clean. The paper is somewhat tanned. The binding is sound, but worn at the top and tail of the spine and at the corners. No illustrator is credited, but the book is sprinkled with quite enchanting illustrations, including a very dramatic frontispiece, a number of rather feathery full-page drawings, and, my favorite, detailed miniature landscape scenes at the beginning of each chapter.; Ex-library. Though divided into several small parties, they really constituted a group by themselves. The fearful strain of anxiety was plainly visible in their countenances, and even strangers from a distance mingling ampng the Camerton people had no difficulty in picking them out of the throng. Some of them moaned aloud under the burden of their affliction. It seemed as if the suspense must kill them if it continued much longer. The work at the face was going forward with the same persistent energy as before. Shift followed shift during the early part of the night, just as for a week past; but each successive set of men retired with a feeling of disappointment, because, after the turn of the day, each shift had indulged the hope that it might be their privilege to finish the work and be the first to set eyes on the lost men. A few minutes before eleven o clock that night, what proved to be the last shift went on, with a clean breast before them. While engaged in undermining (cutting a narrow channel horizontally under the main body of the coal), one of.the men suddenly cried out: Hush! Every tool was dropped in a moment. Mike McClenahan had struck his pick through into vacancy! A few more lightning-like strokes, and he had opened up a hole several inches in diameter. Hulloa there! cried Mike. Hulloa! was the feeble response. Who s in there? There s six of us. Who are you that s talkin ? I can t make ye out. James Shryock. Good! Who else is with ye? My butty; Thomas Tangey, Archie Atkins, Sam Smallwood, and the two Poles. These latter were foreigners, with long, un- HUSH! pronounceable names, and were always designated as the two.
