Item Description: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1951. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Fritz Wegner (Dustjacket) (illustrator). First UK Edition. 19 x 13 Cms (7.5" x 5"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: First UK printing of this classic in its original dustjacket, published by Hamish Hamilton of London in 1951. 253 pages. Size: 19 x 13 cms (7.5" x 5"). Weight: 355g (12.5 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate the book as very good and the dustjacket as good. The book's original blue cloth covers are generally clean and sound, with a little fading to the top edge and some tiny, inconspicuous holes along the front spine (see photos). The binding is tight and secure throughout. The text is clean, bright and free from foxing. There are new endpapers and a few words penned on to the half title page. The unclipped dustjacket is clean and bright but with some losses at the top and tail of the spine and corners (see photos). It is now protected in a clear, removable Brodart sleeve. A presentable and very rare first UK edition of this most collectible title. THE NOVEL: Holden Caulfield is a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Navigating his way through the challenges of growing up, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves: the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection. Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood behind, The Catcher in the Rye explores the world with disarming frankness and a warm, affecting charisma which has made this novel a universally loved classic of twentieth-century literature. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923 and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003, it was listed at #15 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. Bookseller Inventory # 001479
