Cloth, 4to, 33 cm, xii, 102 pp, 161 ills ( a few in colour) on unpaginated plates. From the blurb - "Dutch manuscript illumination of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries surpasses the better known and more luxurious Flemish School of that period in its naturalness and sincerity in the treatment of portraits, landscapes and seascapes. In spite of its less pretentious appearance it shows itself a forerunner of seventeenth- century Dutch panel painting. Before the unification of the Netherlands, manuscript illumination in the northern territory approximating modern Holland, had acquired a particular style, different from that of Flanders in the south. In fact, before 1450 pro- duction in the north was much more creative pictorially and iconographically than that in the southern provinces. Later, more productive centers appeared in Flanders; but although more lavish, those manuscripts show neither the unity nor the originality of style that can be seen in Dutch manuscripts. Dutch style differs from that of its neighbors in its more authentic, spontaneous vision and realistic representation of the external world and human activity. The humanistic realism of its style finds its religious counterpart in the Devotio moderna, a movement that originated in western Holland during the same period and that foreshadowed Dutch Protestantism. Many manuscripts were produced in this milieu." Very Good in a used dustwrapper which is faded around the spine and has neat tape repairs to the top edge of the rear panel.
