Written by George Sturt under a pen name adopted from his home "Bourne" near Farnham Surrey and being an astute observation of the changes to village life in the rural farming community in which he grew up and had experience of through the family wheelwright business of which he also wrote. Brown Boards. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. Reprint. 206pp. An attractive reprint in a very fresh condition. Slight rubbing to the head of the spine, under the wrapper. Neat small name inscription to the top corner of the front end paper. Very fresh and firm. Slightest of fading to the spine of the wrapper with slight shelf wear. A very good copy.

A sound, clean copy of the first reprint (the first being in 1912) which is bound in blue cloth boards with, still clear, gilt title lettering on the spine. Extremities are a tad worn and knocked but not severely so at all. There is also the odd mark and bit of discolouring to the cloth but not really that noticeable. Internally the book is nice and clean, albeit with browned/toned end papers and page block edge. Name inscription on the front paste down page of "Ken Deer TTD, Loughborough College and, also, a charming ex libris owner book plate on the front fly leaf for the same person which is dated 1941. (Ken's father was George Deer whoc was a trades union leader and Labour MP during the 1940s. This book is one of a collection acquired from his family. See other listings. First American edition, bound from British sheets. Title page is a cancel with the Doran imprint; spine cloth bears the original Hodder & Stoughton slug. Classic work on the sociology of rural villages and the changes wrought by advancing technology. Sturt (1863-1927) was a wheelwright by trade, and wrote from a rather unusual perspective - a sensitive, self-educated tradesman, documenting and eulogizing the passing of pre-industrial Britain. The first edition is somewhat uncommon.
