Eight colour plates and ten designs by Brock greet the reader throughout. Bind good, intact. Rare near good, charming illustrated volume of this classic. In October 1843, Charles Dickens, heavily in debt and obligated to his publisher, began work to help his family's meagre income. A Christmas Carol has long since become one of the most beloved in the English language. As much a part of the holiday season as holly, mistletoe, and evergreen wreaths, this perennial favourite continues to delight and rekindle thoughts of charity and goodwill. With its characters exhibiting many qualities often ascribed to Dickens himself, the imaginative and entertaining tale relates Ebenezer Scrooge's eerie encounters with spectral visitors. Journeying through Christmases past, present, and future, he is ultimately transformed from an arrogant, obstinate, and insensitive miser to a generous, warm-hearted, and caring human being. Written by one of England's greatest and most popular novelists, A Christmas Carol has come to epitomize the true meaning of Christmas. From preface: I've endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour w/themselves, the season, or me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it. - C. D." Two pages of available titles at back. Printed by "Colston & Co. Limited, Printers, Edinburgh." 158 pages. Insured post. A near fine copy, upper cover a little dusty but with bright gilt. Gift inscription to front endpaper. Eight colour plates and numerous black and white drawings. Dickens completed writing A Christmas Carol in November 1843 and sought to have it published as a lavishly produced book. Add to basketFirst Brock editions, in the publisher's deluxe vellum bindings, all housed in the rare original curved-entry blue card slipcase. Brock illustrated the first three of the five Dickens Christmas gift books in 1905, completing the series in 1907. This attractive set is an excellent example of Dent's long and successful collaboration with Brock, a leading illustrator of 19th-century literature. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) emphasized historical accuracy in his illustrations and gathered artefacts from the Regency and early Victorian periods to use as models of period design and fashion. He rose to prominence in 1898 after producing for J. M. Dent, in collaboration with his brother Henry Matthew Brock, the first colour-illustrated editions of the novels of Jane Austen. In 1905, Dent commissioned Charles Edmund Brock to illustrate their new editions of Dickens's Christmas books, since his "benign drawings would most accord with the words" (Houfe, p. 196). Brock's editions appeared in both deluxe and trade issues. Three works, octavo. Colour frontispieces and 7 plates after watercolours in each volume, illustrated title pages printed in red and black, line drawings in the text, all by Charles Edmund Brock. Original vellum, spine and front covers lettered and profusely decorated in gilt, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, red silk bookmarkers (detached in Christmas Carol). Spines a little dulled, covers notably bright, small mark on The Chimes front cover; slipcase a little worn, small loss to upper corners of entry, subtly stabilized and remaining sound: a near-fine set.
