Hardcover. Condition: Very Good +. Third Edition. A Plain Commentary on the Four Holy Gospels, Intended Chiefly for Devotional Reading was written by John William Burgon (1813?1888), an English Anglican priest and Dean of Chichester, and was first published in 1855. The commentary is known for its clear, straightforward style and its focus on devotional reading, making it accessible to both scholars and laypeople.Author John William Burgon was a respected Anglican cleric, scholar, and Dean of Chichester Cathedral from 1876 until his death. He was known for his conservative theological views, especially his strong defense of biblical inerrancy and the Byzantine text-type of the New Testament. His most famous contribution to Christian scholarship is his defense of the traditional Greek text, which formed the basis for many Bible translations, including the King James Version.A delightful, slightly mysterious, and warm inscription from the author in dipped antiquarian ink on the front flyleaf reads: "For the acceptance of Annie Harvey - whose happiness will be ever dear to me, though she may call herself by any other name - from her friend, The writer of the Commentary. JWB", and is dated "Advent A.D. 1887". Third edition, 1877. This four volume complete set on The Four Gospels, is beautifully and uniquely bound in matching, full leather. Covers are tree-calf leather with a rectangular panel and blind tooled decoration is at the center of each board. Gilt lining and ornamentation along the edges. Hubbed spines bear five raised bands and are profusely ornamented in gilt, each with a red and black leather label stamped with gilt lettering. Red top stain. Gilt tooled decoration along the inner boards at the edge. Marbled endpapers. On a shelf standing side by side, this set spans 6.5 inches.Volume I: St. Matthew. xxxii, 712 pp.Volume II: St. Mark. 396 pp. Volume III: St. Luke. 648 pp.Volume IV: St. John. 940 pp. CONDITION: A stunningly handsome antiquarian set, we rarely see ornamentation such as this panel decoration / leather treatment, present on these volumes. Mild external wear with light chipping at the head and foot of each spine. The back board has been replaced in similar style on Volume I, but the pattern is speckled rather than tree calf. Hinges are strong and the binding is sound and tight. Leaves have ever-so-lightly toned, and are completely unmarked except for the author's inscription, and bookseller notation in pencil on the front flyleaf of Volume I.
