About this Item: l'Editore Tommaso Cuccioni, Roma. Blindstamped Cloth. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition Presumed. Framed and matted print, and quite possibly also an uncut version of hand-colored costume panels for the souvenir leporello of the same title (with 18 out of the usual leporello count of 30 or so costume portraits). N.d., circa 1840. The exposed print is 29 by 40.5 cm, and with the matting and frame, 59 by 62.5 cm. These images of Vatican dress, both which cover both ecclessiastic and military costume. While on the one hand this appears to be the uncut version, since there are cursive captions above and below the ruled portraits, we have to think this was sold to be framed and hung as well. We believe that this particular print format is in any case scarce, as we have never encountered it as such before, while we do come across the leporello, and other book formats with these illustrations, with some regularity. Attractively framed and matted. Some light soiling of the print beneath the glass. Seller Inventory # 006174

About this Item: l'Editore Tommaso Cuccioni, Roma. Blindstamped Cloth. Condition: Very Good Plus. First Edition Presumed. N.d., circa 1840. Large paper version: folio, 34 by 24 cm. With 39 hand-colored costume plates, plus engraved title page with hand-colored vignette. These images of Vatican dress, both which cover both ecclessiastic and military costume, are generally encountered in a far smaller, leporello format, with also fewer images -- typically thirty plates. In this other guise, the target audience were the many tourists who paid a visit to Rome and were enamored with a pocket souvenir. The diminutive leporello assuredly exudes enormous charm that has not diminished over nearly two centuries, but the images really do not quite match these original Marroni engravings with their excellent detailing and glorious hand-coloring, and we would stress, the coloring is not only brilliant, but also it would appear not to have lost one bit of lustre from the day it was applied to paper. Scattered soiling, mostly on the first few leaves and the fore-edge, and a few light finger smudes, not affecting the imagery. Moderate wear to the red cloth. A few white spots along rear edge.
