Copyright page dated 1947. 181 pages. DJ taped along top and bottom edges to keep closed tears from separating further. Minor fading along front and rear covers of DJ. Top inch of DJ on spine partially torn away. Illustration of a cow on front cover of DJ. "Probably Rs. 6 each volume" printed on rear cover of DJ. Rs. 6 printed at bottom of front flap of DJ. Boards are neat and tidy. Black lettering on spine is clean and legible. Small 1 inch faded purple stamp mark on front attached endpaper. Pages are lightly toned but neat, text is legible. Colorful pictorial jacket in yellow, green, black and white wih a prominent cow's head on front panel. Born in India in 1908, Raja Rao is a towering figure in Indian English language fiction. OCLC lists some 50 works of biography and/or literary criticism related to him. An award-winning author, who was also Professor of Indian Philosophy in the University of Texas, 1965-1980, Rao wrote several other books, among which are KANTHAPURA (1938) and THE SERPENT AND THE ROPE (1960). THE COW OF THE BARRRICADES, his only collection of short stories, includes the following titles: Javni, The Little Gram Shop, The True Story of Kanakapala Protector of Gold, Akkayya, Naraiga, A Client, In Khandesh, Companions, and The Cow of the Barricades. Several of these stories appear here for the first time in English, e.g., The Little Gram Shop, Akkayya, and A Client.
