Translated from the Russian by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. 595 pages. paperback. Cover design by Peter Mendelsund. keywords: Literature Translated Russia . FROM THE PUBLISHER - It is a murder story, told from a murderer's point of view, that implicates even the most innocent reader in its enormities. It is a cat-and-mouse game between a tormented young killer and a cheerfully implacable detective. It is a preternaturally acute investigation of the forces that impel a man toward sin, suffering, and grace. Ever since its publication in 1866, Crime and Punishment has intrigued readers and sorely tested translators, the best of whom seemed to capture one facet of Dostoevsky's masterpiece while missing the rest. Now Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky render this elusive and wildly innovative novel with an energy, suppleness, and range of voice that do full justice to the genius of its creator. inventory #42289.

Paperback. Condition: New. 564pp. Octavo [20.5cm]; black and white illustrated wraps. Crime and Punishment (1866) is the story of a murder committed on principle, of a killer who wishes by his action to set himself outside and above society. A novel of great physical and psychological tension, pervaded by Dostoevsky's sinister evocation of St Petersburg, it also has moments of wild humour. Dostoevsky's own harrowing experiences mark the novel. He had himself undergone interrogation and trial, and was condemned to death, a sentence commuted at the last moment to penal servitude. In prison he was particularly impressed by one hardened murderer who seemed to have attained a spiritual equilibrium beyond good and evil: yet witnessing the misery of other convicts also engendered in Dostoevsky a belief in the Christian idea of salvation through suffering. -- from publisher. Hardcover. Condition: New. McKEAN, DAVE (illustrator). 1st Edition. HB - 1st. Print - NEW in NEW Slipcase / No DJ as issued (Sealed in publisher's shrinkwrap) (Comes in publisher supplied shipping box illustrated by Dave McKean) - Fyodor Dostoevsky?s 1866 novel Crime and Punishment, arguably the first modern exploration of psychological realism, is not only a gem of Russian literature but an internationally renowned classic. It?s a tormented, intricate tale of violence and its discontents, with themes of morality and redemption that still resonate as sharply today as they did 150 years ago. Now this masterpiece has been vividly transformed by the powerful illustrations of award-winning artist Dave McKean, whose multimedia paintings are shrouded with the specters and shadows of Raskolnikov?s fever dreams. - Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. Featuring an introduction by Dr. Lonny Harrison, a professor of Russian literature at the University of Texas.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition of the Constance Garnett translation, and the first edition translated into English directly from the Russian. (The 1886 translation, published by Vizetelly in England and Crowell in the US, was actually a translation of a French translation.) This copy is in extraordinary condition; with the exception of some minor dust soiling on the top page edges, this copy is in truly fine condition, unread, no ownership markings, cloth unfaded, gilt bright and shining as the day it was published. Possibly because of the earlier translation, this issue seems to be considerably more scarce than other volumes in the series.

FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, price comensurate with condition and rarity. Vizetelly's one-volume novels XIII, London: Vizetelly & Co 1886. Publisher's advertisement to verso of half title with list of other one volume novels. 24 pgs of publisher's illustrated catalogue to rear dated 1885. Floral end papers with some light browning, text clean. 195mm, bound in the original blue cloth which has age appropriate scuffing/bruising to edges, lettered in red and black with four rules at the head and foot of the boards & spine, blind rule & blind stamp publisher's motif to rear board. The front and spine have old damp damage which has stained the boards, back board has only a few small spots and light wear, spine is cocked, contents clean. There are some heavy cracks to the gutters making the boards a little shaky but the boards are still firmly attached. 10cm closed tear to pgs 197/198 and there is a previous owner's name in ink (historical, not new) to the top of the full title page. There are also some light, unobtrusive folds to the lower corners of pgs 389-394 and a 12cm sharp crease/fold to pg 267/268. There is a small (8mm) closed tear to to top edge of pg5/6 of the illustrated publisher's catalogue to rear. The translation is presented anonymously but is generally believed to have been by the Russian born British novelist Frederick Wishaw. Both the English and American first editions are extremely rare and there are very few recorded sales (last recorded sale in March 2017 for NZ$25,900). This UK edition was published six months before the US edition, making this the TRUE FIRST EDITION in English, of which only seven copies are known to have advertising verso of the half title page (the earliest issue point) - this is presumably the 8th. There appears to be less than 10 copies held in libraries worldwide. Please feel free to contact us directly to discuss shipping or photographs- strongly recommended.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition in English (US edition); A Very Good to Near Fine book in a beautiful custom clamshell box. A stunning copy of this novel, considered to be one of the greatest works of literature in history; this is the 1886 edition published by Crowell in New York, also published in London using the same sheets, with no priority determined; the book was originally published in 1866 in Russian as a serial novel, then published as one volume in 1867, again in Russian. This is the first issue with the one page advertisement at the back with Crime and Punishment listed first at a price of $1.50. This copy is in very good to near fine condition with a square, tight binding and bright gold lettering over clean brown boards; the book does show some age spotting and light foxing to the page edges and pastedowns, a few scattered pencil marks throughout the text, a couple of small creases to the page corners where a reader marked their spot, and a small chip out of the top of a few pages, not affecting the text (pages 15, 19, 227, 233, and 293). The book has benefitted from some expert cleaning and reinforcement, including some repair to the boards and partial restoration of the lettering at the top of the front board and the gold spine lettering, leaving this book in lovely condition; housed in a one of a kind clamshell box that features hand marbled paper, gorgeous light brown boards with a facsimile of the title page on the cover, and a spine label inset with the title; one would be hard pressed to find a nicer presentation of this seminal work. An important addition to any literature collection. Will ship free by Priority mail, carefully packaged in a sturdy box.
