It was co-founded in 1935 by Sir Allen Lane with his brothers Richard and John, as a line of the publishers The Bodley Head, only becoming a separate company the following year. Penguin's success demonstrated that large audiences existed for serious books. Penguin also had a significant impact on public debate in Britain, through its books on culture, politics, the arts, and science. ~#~ 434 p. - INTERNATIONAL BUYERS ? About this Item: Random House, New York, 1956. Hardcover. Condition: very good. Red octavo (black spine); xxiv, 629 p ; 20 cm. Psychological fiction; Mystery. || Raskolnikov commits murder. He then must deal both with the police, and his own guilty conscience. Determined to overreach his humanity and assert his untrammelled individual will, Raskolnikov, an impoverished student living in the St. Petersburg of the Tsars, commits an act of murder and theft and sets into motion a story which, for its excrutiating suspense, its atmospheric vividness, and its profundity of characterization and vision, is almost unequaled in the literatures of the world. The best known of Dostoevsky's masterpieces, Crime and Punishment can bear any amount of rereading without losing a drop of its power over our imagination. -- WorldCat. Small tear & very little wear to spine head & head fold, very gentle wear to spine foot & foot fold, top-front corner & bottom-rear corner partially clipped, very little rubbing to corners, two faint blind stamps to front free endpapers, else very good. First edition (presumed; no earlier dates stated). Seller Inventory # 81818

FYODOR MIKHAILOVICH DOSTOYEVSKY, (1821-1881), was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist and philosopher. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia, and engage with a variety of philosophical and religious themes. He began writing in his 20s, and his first novel, Poor Folk, was published in 1846 when he was 25. His major works include Crime and Punishment (1866). The first two parts of Crime and Punishment were published in January and February 1866 in the periodical The Russian Messenger, attracting at least 500 new subscribers to the magazine. About this Item: Signet 733, New York, 1949. Condition: Near Fine. James Avati (illustrator). First Printing. Dostoyevsky, Fyodor. CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. NY: Signet, 1949 (August, #733). First Paperback Edition, first printing. SIGNED BY COVER ARTIST JAMES AVATI. A NEAR FINE copy, with just the tiniest, virtually invisible bit of lam lift and edgewear. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner and Erskine Caldwell, as well as classic authors like Dostoyevsky, for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism that put Norman Rockwell to shame. We were fortunate to acquire a small cache of his famous Signet first printing covers which were signed by him at his home in Petaluma, California a half-dozen years before he passed away. To the best of our knowledge, he never signed any other books for which he provided illustrations other than the ones which were acquired on this one occasion. Please search the keywords James Avati to see if any other of his signed copies still remain in our stock. Signed. Seller Inventory # 003061
