This is a humorous, vintage bartender's guide - "Crosby Gaige's Cocktail Guide and Ladies' Companion" with its original dust jacket. 1945 1st edition, 4th printing (stated); M. Barrows and Company; New York. "Richly embellished with drawings almost from life" by Rea Irvin. From the dust jacket: "This book, the publisher hopes, will serve mankind in several ways. It may be perused with quiet enjoyment by the fireside, when the cat has been put out and the family has been tucked in bed. Parts of it may be safely read aloud in select circles during that deadly pause when talk runs out and guests get restless. Here is not merely a compilation of cocktail recipes but a wise and witty discussion of the philosophy of drinking, of the arts of sociability and conviviality, and a picture of the fads, fanciers and foibles of many famous contemporaries." Condition: There is a dark stain strip along the bottom edge of the covers & spine; small 1/4" cloth tear at the top edge of the back cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages lightly age-toned and mostly clean with only a thin, 1" light stain at the outer edge of the first six pages. Tanning to the end papers and pastedowns from the jacket flaps. The rear end paper and pastedown have a dark stain strip along the bottom edge that mimics the stain at the bottom edge of the covers. The top edge of the text block is partially tanned. Light musty odor. Overall the book is in Good condition. The back cover of the dust jacket has a partial ring stain as well as a stain spot over the photograph of the author; there are small tears/pieces missing at the flap corners and at the top and bottom edges of the spine; light tanning and foxing at the top edge of the flaps. The jacket is un-clipped with the price intact on the front flap. Overall the jacket is in Fair condition.
