Published by LondonFaber and Faber . (1954)
Quantity available: 1
From: Robert Frew Ltd. ABA ILAB (London, United Kingdom)
About this Item: LondonFaber and Faber ., 1954. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (21.5 x 14 cm). Original pale blue wrappers printed in black, sewn as issued. A near fine copy with the original cream coloured mailing envelope. A very nice example and scarce thus. With one full-page colour illustration by David Jones. Eliot's last separately published poem attempts to reconcile the division between a child's joy and an adult's fear in the face of the Christian faith and explain why the two coexist and are bound to each other by necessity, echoing themes from his other poems including The Waste Land and Burnt Norton. The cultivation of Christmas trees acts as a metaphor for keeping fresh and green that memory of childhood wonder whilst simultaneously attending to the soul's preparation for everlasting life. This poem was part of Faber & Faber's second series of the 'Ariel Poems' originally commissioned by Faber and Gwyer for the Christmas gift market (intended as holiday cards) from 1927 to 1931 (First Series). Each pamphlet consisted of just one previously unpublished poem by a major writer, with a decorated cover and a coloured illustration by a well-known or talented younger artist. The poets were asked to write verses either relating to Christmas or on something appropriately seasonal. Beginning with Thomas Hardy, the series included verse from both established literary figures and newer voices. The series was reinstituted for one year only (1954) with our (New Series) set of larger-formatted pamphlet. Seller Inventory # 55182
