About this Item: Covici Friede, New York City, 1936. hb. 8vo, pp. viii, 269. "Cup of Gold" was Steinbeck's first novel. It was first published in 1929 by McBride and Co., in an edition limited to just over 1,500 copies, and is now quite scarce. The second hard cover printing was not until 1936, and was undertaken by Covici Friede, using the shets of the earlier McBride edition. Only 939 copies of this second printing were issued. In the same year, Covici Friede re-set the type for the book and re-issued it as the second edition, with a Preface written in 1936 by Lewis Gannett."Cup of Gold" is a work of historical fiction loosely-based on the life and death of the 17th century pirate Henry Morgan. Our offering is the Covici Friede second edition, and is encased in the original dust jacket, which mentions Steinbeck's novella, "Of Mice and Men" on the front panel. The publisher is not identified on the spine of the dust jacket. The corners of the book are slightly bumped and there is some very light spotting to the rear board. The hinges are strong and there are no former owner's markings. Overall, the book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows wear at the folds, and some light chipping cross the top and bottom near the spine. Overall, it remains in good, to good plus, condition. Bound in original dark blue cloth with gilt-decorated spine. Seller Inventory # 044556

Author's First Book, preface by Lewis Gannett, this edition used to be called the second edition, however, recent scholarship has shown conclusively that what used to be referred to as the first edition, second issue is actually the second edition, making this book the third edition, see Goldstone & Payne A1c and Morrow 4, both of which perpetuate the myth that this is the second edition. About this Item: Covici Friede, New York, 1936. Second Edition. A very handsome copy bound in finely woven dark blue cloth stamped lightly in gilt along the spine, most of which is quite dull. Very clean and tight throughout. With dark blue topstaining. In a complete, striking pictorial dust jacket featuring the piratical Morgan and his men on the front panel. With some light nicking to the top and bottom of the spine ends and a tiny "v" chip at the top center edge of the front panel. Darkening to the spine. A solid copy of this reprint of Steinbeck's first book. "This is the first novel that John Steinbeck wrote, and it will be rediscovered by his readers with delight. It is a wild tale based on the life of the king of freebooters, Sir Henry Morgan. We follow him from the black Welsh glens, his birthplace, to the gold and blue Sea of the Caribs. We see him become the overlord of the scum of the sea--the blustering Brotherhood of the Tortuga, the cut-throats of Goaves, Portutugese--as vicious a crew as ever was gathered aboard ship." It centers on Morgan's assault and sacking of Panama City, the "Cup of Gold, ' and the women fairer than the sun reputed to be found there. Seller Inventory # 478
