About this Item: Vale Press | Hacon & Ricketts printed at the Ballantyne Press, London, 1901. Hard Cover. Condition: Good binding. Demy Octavo. xxx, [1 (colophon)], [1 (blank)] pp. Limited Edition, one of 310 copies. As issued in holland backed boards with printed title label on the front board. Text is printed in black in the Vale font; full-page border and 10-line initial on the opening page as well as five wood engraving by Ricketts. Text in Latin. Two attractive bookplates on the front pastedown; offsetting at the endpapers as usual; some foxing, primarily at the preliminary and terminal pages. Spine has some fraying at the ends and in a few places along the back joint--binding is solid. Light toning to the covers with some wear at the corners, heavier at the top corners. Nevertheless, a handsome volume. In her history of the press Watry remarks, "Undoubtedly, one of Rickett's motivations for printing a Latin text was the opportunity to display the Vale fount to its best advantage. Two years earlier [in "Defence of the Revival of Printing"] he had noted that the Italian founts 'obtain an incalculable advantage over us Englishmen in the absence 'k', 'w', and ugly recurring consonants that break up the appearance of our own tongue.' The presence of fewer tailed letters gives the printed page a greater evenness of effect, especially in the large format that Ricketts chose for this text." Watry B33. Seller Inventory # 5497
