About this Item: Day & Son, London. Hardback. 4to. Nd. c.1860. First edition? A near very good copy in the original orange cloth which is elaborately decorated in gilt on the spine and upper board. The spine is darkened but the lettering is readable. All edges gilt. New end-papers. Two ownership inscriptions, the earlier of which is dated 1860. Unpaginated. 40 lithographic plates, showing scenes from life in British India, all of which are tissue-guarded other than the title page. Some foxing mainly to early pages and to edges of some plates. A humorous account of life in a Bengal "station" in the middle of the 19th century. A decent copy. Photographs on request. About this Item: Day & Son, 1859. Cloth. Condition: Good. First Edition. Orange cloth binding with gilt decoration to front board and spine, flower decorated endpapers and gilt top edge. Three pages have come loose and are now laid in the book, the list of the illustrations and preface and a later page called Our Judge, these pages and some of the other early pages are a bit frayed with small tears from sticking out slightly from the text block. The spine is darkened and the corners and head and tail of the spine are heavily worn. Beautifully written and illustrated account of life in the British Raj. About this Item: Day & Son, London. Hardback. Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition. No date but c.1860, first edition published in 1859. Forty original lithographic plates. Unpaginated. Yellow / orange cloth binding with gilt and impressed decoration, all edges gilt. Binding is good and firm but well used. Spine and edges knocked and spine faded. Ink marks to cover. Previous owners book plate on front end plate. There is foxing on most of the pages including on the plates. Hard to find in its celebrated ornate original binding. The author-illustrator was a captain in the Bengal Engineers and also published an account of his activities during the Indian Mutiny, as well as a volume of sketches of travel in northern Europe. The satirical plates, each with an accompanying two-page text, depict life at a British colonial station in India, with heavy emphasis on social and sporting activities, with several images of pompous dignitaries and of native life. The sporting plates include horse-racing, tiger-shooting, and pig-sticking. This is an oversized item so may incur higher postage rates. Further details and images are available on request. book.
