El poema se basa en la leyenda de Elaine de Astolat, descrita en una novella italiana del siglo XIII, Donna di Escalotta. La dama vive apartada en la isla de Shalott, situada en el río que fluye hacia Camelot. Una maldición la ha confinado en el castillo que domina la isla y pasa el día tejiendo las imágenes que ve por la ventana a través de un espejo, pues le está prohibido mirar al exterior. Por allí pasan las gentes hacia Camelot, incluso sir Lancelot, de quien se enamora a primera vista y a quien no puede evitar mirar directamente por la ventana, lo que despierta la maldición. La dama deja de tejer, se tiende en una barca y va muriendo mientras la corriente la lleva a Camelot, donde Lancelot descubrirá por primera vez a la dama, ya inerte.
