First Edition
First edition, 8vo, pp. xxvii, [1], 412; original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt spine; a few cracks to spine; hinges reinforced, preliminaries foxed, else very good and sound. Late 19th-century bookplate on front pastedown, contemporary ownership signature on title page. This popular and influential work went through four editions, the last in 1878, and was translated into Dutch and German. After Pickering's Vocabulary of Words Peculiar to The United States (1815), which treated a mere 500 words, no significant work on Americanisms appeared until this work of Bartlett, which Mencken calls "the first attempt at a comprehensive dictionary of Americanisms." Kennedy 11380; Sabin 3738; Vancil, p. 20.

First Edition
First edition, 8vo, expanded to small folio, xxvii, [1], 412; the whole interleaved in folio throughout; 20th-century quarter brown morocco over marbled boards; generally fine; judging from the soiling on the page edges, this copy was interleaved at an early date, much earlier than the relatively modern binding, but there are no annotations on the interleaves. This popular and influential work went through four editions, the last in 1878, and was translated into Dutch and German. Bartlett describes the words in this book as unique to the United States and places emphasis on New England Americanisms and their provenance. He writes that many New England words and phrases are derived from those of England. Other regional words and phrases are also included such as those from the South. Bartlett defines each word or phrase, and for some, provides its origins and some examples of its usage. A sampling of the Americanisms in this book: "all-winsome" ("sweet, pleasant"), "Americanism" ("a way of speaking peculiarly to this country"), "catty-cornered" ("diagonally"), "gravy" ("used in New England instead of 'juice'"), "hoity-toity" ("an exclamation surprise or disaprobation, with some degree of contempt"), "latish" ("rather late"), "pollywog, or pollywig" ("a tadpole"), "sky-racket" ("the vulgar pronunciation of 'sky-rocket'"), "tit for tat" ("I shall treat you as you treat me"), and "yourn" ("contraction of 'your own'"). John Russell Bartlett (1805-1886) was an American linguist and historian. He is best-known for this work, A Dictionary of Americanisms. The individual to whom he presented this copy was Augustus Baldwin Longstreet (1790-1870), an American lawyer, judge, minister, educator, and humorist. Longstreet is best-known for his book, Georgia Scenes. Inscribed by Author(s).
