His first job was in London as a medical illustrator, where he honed his skills and was finally employed as staff to The Illustrated London News. He became one of the finest watercolorists of his time, and an artist of supreme technical ability. Even though he was noted for painting brilliant landscapes, his chief market, was his work of semi-nude nymphets. This group of drawings include his numerous nudes, as well as his scenes and portraits.
