Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Smallish book about 4 by 6 1/2 inches with some 142 pages. Bound in tan paper over boards with red leather spine and tips. Gilt lettering and decoration on spine only. With stiff tan paper end papers. This is volume two only from the original two volume set. Perhaps the most noted contents of this book is the early printing of the famous Benjamin Franklin piece on 'The Morals Of Chess'. Also includes a substantial number of chess anecdotes about famous people. Bit of rubbing to the leather; some darkening to the covers paper apparently from the glue used. An unusually nice copy of this book. VERY GOOD.

Original boards, rebacked with original spine label. 267 pp., folding frontispiece plate. Edges are untrimmed. Moderate foxing throughout. Early American chess book which attempts to introduce a new system of game notation, illustrated by the plate. The text includes the short essay "The Morals of Chess" by Benjamin Franklin at pages 237-241. The plate, depicting a chess board with squared numbered as a guide for the new system of notation, is very rare. Neither OCLC 3252237 nor the American Antiquarian Society entry (#251824) mention this plate as part of the proper collation of this volume. American Imprints 16032.

An uncut copy bound in original drab grey boards, expertly rebacked with cream paper; some dusting to e.ps. Early inscription at head of half title. This was first published in London by Ogilvy in 1802, and in America in 1817. The name of the compiler has never been established.

Frontis, 7 x 4, blue-grey boards, printed paper spine labels, 184pp, 142pp. Covers loose and spotted, Volume I front cover and ffep detached, corners bumped, spines gone except for small piece on Volume II, spine labels missing pieces, ink name & inscription (Evey? ? from her grandfather 31 dec-'87), a few loose signatures in Volume I else good. Dr. Franklin's essay "The Morals of Chess" is to be found in Volume II, pages 115-119. Benjamin Franklin started playing chess in the 1730s, which is also the time period that he started working on "Morals", it didn't become public until 1786. This essay was reprinted several times by the end of the 18th centrury and translated into French, German and Russian. It was originally printed on Franklin's Passy Press but no known copy has survived. This book, "An Easy Introduction" was extremely popular and was reprinted many times. FIRST EDITION, EXTREMELY SCARCE.
