From a - contemporary review: "The story of Curll and his "top-shelf" books - his obscenities, his effronteries and evasions, his chastisements and his triumphs - has been told before, but never with this knowledge, this wealth of illustration, this unfeigned and unconcealed sympathy with the humour and vitality of - an irrepressible scoundrel. The story deserves a wider circulation than can be given by 500 copies at two guineas. But we have no quarrel with the publisher, for the book is elaborately documented. And the documents are important both in themselves and for the methods of investigation which they unfold. Many books which are wll known from contemporary evidence to have been CurlI's Property, or of his procuring, do not bear his name. But he published lists of his books both separately and in the newspapers. These lists Mr. Straus has rightly made the basis of his bibliography ; and his sources include fifteen London newspapers. Even so we are on dangerous ground; a book may appear in CurIl's lists which was not his at all, except in the sense that he had copies for sale in his shop. But this ambiguity was no doubt part of the plan. The public which wanted 'Curlicism' got its broad hints from the advertisements. But if any book attracted unfavourable notice - in the King's Bench or in the House of Lords - the obvious disclaimer was ready." Contents: pt. I. The man.- pt. II. The books; a handlist (1706-1746) Very Good.

Add to basketCloth, 8vo, 24 cm, x, 388 pp, 8 ills, map. From the blurb: "Edmund Curll was a notorious figure among the publishers of the early eighteenth century: for his boldness, his lack of scruple, his publication of work without author's content, and his taste for erotic and scandalous publications. He was in legal trouble on several occasions for piracy and copyright infringement, unauthorised publication of the works of peers, and for seditious, blasphemous, and obscene publications. He stood in the pillory in 1728 for seditious libel. Above all, he was the constant target of the greatest poet and satirist of his age, Alexander Pope, whose work he pirated whenever he could and who responded with direct physical revenge (an emetic slipped into a drink) and persistent malign caricature. The war between Pope and Curll typifies some of the main cultural battles being waged between creativity and business. The story has normally been told from the poet's point of view, though more recently Curll has been celebrated as a kind of literary freedom-fighter; this book, the first full biography of Curll since Ralph Straus's The Unspeakable Curll (1927), seeks to give a balanced and thoroughly-researched account of Curll's career in publishing between 1706 and 1747, untangling the mistakes and misrepresentations that have accrued over the years and restoring a clear sense of perspective to Curll's dealings in the literary marketplace. It examines the full range of Curll's output, including his notable antiquarian series, and uses extensive archive material to detail Curll's legal and other troubles. For the first time, what is known about this strange, interesting, and awkward figure is authoritatively told." Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. As the most scandalous English publisher of his age, Edmund Curll (c.1675-1747) helped to give Grub Street a local habitation and a name in the literary world. By cashing in on scandals, publishing pornography, offering up patent medicine, using all publicity as good publicity, he managed a small empire of printing houses. He would publish high and low quality writing alike, so long as it sold. Octavo: xii, 320 pp. with a frontispiece and 32 illustrations. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles. The spine is moderately sun faded; otherwise very good.
