Item Description: London: William Pickering, 1847. Small 4to, xxix, 268 pp., color diagrams throughout printed in red, blue, yellow and black; wood-engraved initials. Original half brown morocco, gilt-lettered backstrip, a very bright and clean copy without the usual heavy foxing and staining. First edition of Byrne's presentation of Euclidean geometry, in which colours are substituted for the usual letters to designate the angles and lines of geometric figures. Tufte's copy ($15,000, 2010) was described thus: "BYRNE'S SPECTACULAR RENDERING OF EUCLIDEAN GEOMETRY USING FOUR-COLOR PRINTING. The stark use of primary colors was envisaged by Byrne as a teaching aid. "Each proposition is set in Caslon italic, with a four line initial engraved on wood by Mary Byfield: the rest of the page is a unique riot of red, yellow and blue . attaining a verve not seen again on book pages till the days of Dufy, Matisse and Derain" (McLean). "Color serves as a label most notably of all in Oliver Byrne's 1847 edition of Euclid's Geometry. This truly visual Euclid discards the letter-coding native to geometry texts. In a proof, each element names itself by consistent shape, color, and orientation; instead of talking about angle DEF, the angle is shown--appropriately enough for geometry" (Tufte, Envisioning Information, p.84). Byrne's depiction of Pythagoras is a classic, with the squares being visually interpreted so in vivid blocks of colour. In a technical tour-de-force, Whittingham skillfully aligned the different color blocks for printing to produce "One of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century" (McLean). Against McLean's conclusion that it is a "decided complication of Euclid", Edward Tufte finds that "A close look, however, indicates that Byrne's design clarifies the overly indirect and compicated Euclid, at least for certain readers" (ibid.) "THE MOST ATTRACTIVE EDITION OF EUCLID THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN" (Werner Oechslin, in an essay to the Taschen reprint, Cologne: 2010). Ing, Charles Whittingham Printer 46; Keynes, Pickering pp. 37, 65; McLean, Victorian Book Design p.51. Bookseller Inventory # 107051

Item Description: William Pickering, London, 1847. Blue publishers cloth rebacked, spine and front boards in gilt yellow endpapers may be new? a few marginal repairs see D, F4, 12, DD3, HH4. its looks very much like a washed copy with new endpapers. First and only edition of Byrne's work on Euclidean geometry, in which colors (red, yellow, blue and black) are substituted for the usual letters to designate the angles and lines of geometric figures. Written and designed to simplify Euclid's propositions, this remarkable example of Victorian printing is described by Rauri McLean as "one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century" (Victorian Book Design, p. 70).The printing proved to be extremely difficult, requiring exact registration; only one thousand copies were originally published. After its exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851, Sparling remarked that "the application of color printing for a didactic purpose was relatively uncommon . . . Color wood engraving proved a difficult and expensive technique; by 1851 it was increasingly being supplanted by chromolithography" (The Great Exhibition, 137). Bookseller Inventory # 16034

Item Description: William Pickering, London, 1847. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This copy is the 1st edition, 1st printing of the increasingly scarce Byrne's Elements of Euclid and was printed in 1847 by William Pickering. It is in its original (now rare) but worn binding of bright blue faux morocco ribbed cloth with gold titling to the front and gold page edges. These innovative geometric diagrams are, for the time, a masterpiece of printing. They were intended to facilitate the learning of geometry but perhaps merely complicated it and are printed in startling bright primary colours, yellow, red and blue with black, very reminiscent of the later Mondrian's work. The type face used is Caslon old-face and has ornamental initials. It was stated by an eminent book collector, McLean, to be "one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole 19th century." The binding needs some attention but the text block is firm, although the title page alone is absent. There is, as with nearly all copies of this book, some browning, staining or foxing to many pages. Bookseller Inventory # 005927

Item Description: Sold by Mr. Watkins; Mr. Ayscough optical instrument-makers; Messrs. Heath and Wing; Mr. Bennet mathematical instrument-makers; and by the author London, 1758. First edition. 4to., (28.3 x 22.5 cm). 26pp., 42 engraved plates with moving parts, modern quarter calf, all plates fine, clean, with no tears or repairs, a fine copy. Fine copy of this rare first edition. ESTC online lists only 6 copies: British Library; Kings College London; Houghton Library, Harvard; Columbia University Libraries, New York; Sterling Memorial Library, Yale; Fisher Library, Sydney. John Cowley was a leading mathematician of his day. He became professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in 1761, and produced two remarkable books dealing with Euclidean geometry. The first of these appeared in 1752 and provides a way of "treat[ing] of solids and their sections, by laying before them [young students] a more natural and familiar representation of those bodies, than can be obtained from perspective pictures or draughts delineated upon a plane or flat surface . I come now . to lay before the public a new performance, the chief scope of which is to produce mechanical representations of solids and their sections, for the use of such as would obtain just ideas of those bodies . without any occasion for that great attention which is absolutely requisite to be employed by the mind, when contemplating on the nature and description of those bodies, while expressed only by lines drawn according to the rules of perspective; which is an arduous task." (Preface). This work anticipates the work of others such as Oliver Byrne, who nearly 100 years later, sought to provide a commentary on Euclid using visual methods. Bookseller Inventory # 85501

The works of Euclid printed in Basil, was published by Johann Herwagen from 1533-1558, all of which were folio. Philip Melanchthon provided an introduction for the 1537 first edition and was retained for this second printing (often missing from many printings), however, this printing is formatted quite differently from the first. "from many copies this introduction has been removed by the clerical censor [.]. As there does not appear to be anything objectionable in the introduction itself, this action of the censor must have arisen from hostility to the writer of it." (Thomas-Standord 11). Item Description: William Pickering, London, 1847. First edition. Quarto, xxix, 268 pages, ( 233 x 185 mm.), modern 3/4 panelled red morocco, raised bands, gilt ( note: Byrne mis-spelled on spine), a.e. g.; contemporary inked presentation as 1st class prize for the Collegiate School on the half-title leaf, some paper repairs to right margins of pp. iii-viii, with very light dampstain to the Introduction; collation is [i] - viii, xvii - xxiv, ix-xvi, xxv-xxvi, [1]-2, xxix, xxvii - xxciii, 3- 74, 77-78, 75 -76, 79-268 ( thus, out-of- sequence, but complete). Oliver Byrne has been called, "The Matisse of Mathematics". He was a mathematician, professor, actuary, inventor, civil engineer, and more. As a 21 year-old, in 1838, he issued a pamphlet demonstrating his coloured diagram system on Euclid's first book. This fuller treatment continues to earn him praises. " These works . have a greater aim than mere illustration. I do not introduce colors for the purpose of entertainment, or to amuse by certain combinations of tint and form, but to assist the mind in its researches after truth, to increase the facilities of instruction, and to diffuse permanent knowledge - Oliver Byrne, 1880." "Many consider it the most attractive edition of EUCLID'S ELEMENTS ever produced. . it did not sell well at a price of 25 shillings, almost five times the typical book price at the time - Susan Hawes & Sid Kolpas." " . no one who holds it in his hands can resist the fascination of its illustrations. The pictures are more captivating because they simply suggest, concretely demonstrate ad oculus and thus assist in the comprehension of mathematical laws that initially seem most difficult and abstract - Werner Oechslin." "One of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century. . attaining a verve not seen again on book pages till the days of Dufy, Matisse and Derain - Ruari McLean, VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN AND COLOUR PRINTING." " . a triumph of color printing . Althought the areas of color were all flat tones without any subtleties, it was absolutely necessary that register . be perfect, so that angles and lines met each other at the proper places. Whittingham achieved this and at the same time, designed a page of great elegance and balance. Despite the virtues of the book, it was a commercial failure: of 1000 copies originally printed, 792 remained in stock at Pickering's bankruptcy in 1851-52 - Friedman, COLOR PRINTING IN ENGLAND 1485 - 1870, no. 43.". Item Description: Troiano, Venice, 1565. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. Unknown (illustrator). 1565 Euclid’s Elements (Megarense Philosopho), he second edition of the 1st translation into a modern language (Italian) by Tartaglia. An important work, filled with woodcuts illustrating the mathematical concepts. Euclid’s Elements is the foundation for modern geometry and was for many centuries the go-to textbook for mathematics (until the concepts found their way into other texts). It has proven instrumental in the development of logic and modern science. About the Translator -Niccolò Fontana Tartaglia (1499/1500– 13 December 1557) was an Italian mathematician, engineer (designing fortifications), a surveyor (of topography, seeking the best means of defense or offense) and a bookkeeper from the then-Republic of Venice (now part of Italy). He published many books, including the first Italian translations of Archimedes and Euclid, and an acclaimed compilation of mathematics. Provenance - Provenance (page 44 and page 188, top margin) appears to attribute the 17th century owner as "Giosepe Borghese in 1644". The Borghese were a leading family in Italy in the 17th century. Physical Attributes - Small quarto. Measures 21 x 15 x 3 cm. Leather spine. Pasteboards with paper wraps (ink wash design). All edges painted red. Pages – (1) 315 (each leaf numbered singularly, 630 pages in modern numbering), colophon, (1). Two printer’s marks, and many mathematical woodcuts. Four raised bands on spine, with compartments bordered by double gilt fillets. A single gilt floral decoration centers four of the compartments, with the fifth containing a gilt title on black leather base framed by gilt fillets. Condition - Please see the pictures. I’m going to over-describe the work so you are secure in knowing exactly what you are buying, but the over-riding theme is that it is a complete and sound work, with many clean pages. I’d rate it a 7, passing grade but not head-of-the-class. If content, rather than condition, is your driving factor than I believe you’ll find this a well-priced and pleasing addition to your collection. The boards show evidence that a vertical and horizontal strap were wrapping the book, and caused a light corresponding wave on pages below (to about page 75). The boards show a lot of shelf wear, the pasteboards showing through at the corners and edges. Front and rear joints cracked. Crease in the middle of the spine from when the book is fully opened (not a hollowback). Hinges cracked as well. Mostly the cords are holding the front and rear boards on. What I believe is an old library number decorates the endpaper, wrote on the pastedown and ghosted onto the free front endpaper. Free front endpaper shaken (a little loose). Moisture mark at the top-right 1/3 of the book strong at the front and fades out about page 80. Title page shows extensive repair and is pasted to another paper. Repair looks quite old. Pasting element used yellowed the page. No lack of text.I checked the pagination and all pages are still extant, there are no missing pages. Occasional spots and soiling throughout the book. Two wormholes extend from the top-edge but stay mostly within the top margin for only about 10 pages each. Predominately free of wormholes. Annotation at the top margin of page 9. Additional annotations in all the margins of pages 44, 46 and 47, including an ownership inscription. Quarter sized spot on page 80. Pages misnumbered from 120 to 125, the printers references printed at the bottom and the text show no gap. Foxing dots at the top of pages 180-221. Additional ownership annotations, matching the earlier, at the top margin of 187v and 188r. Pages 200-205 are browned. Page 203 is printed as a number twice, no 202. Pages 215-219 are brown. Ownership inscription again to pages 261v and 262r. 277 and 288 dog eared. 278 another quarter sized browning dot. 278 moisture stain begins and continues through end. Page 315 has stains and one word rubbed out. Last page, colophon, and rear free endpaper are very browned/stained (3 leaves). 1350 Gra. Bookseller Inventory # 4

Item Description: 1781. EUCLID. The Elements of Euclid, viz. The First Six books, Together with the Eleventh and Twelfthe. In this Edition, the Errors, by which Theon, or others, have long ago Vitiated these Books, are Corrected, And some of Euclid's Demonstrations are Restored. By Robert Simson, M.D. Professor of Mathematics in the University of Glassgow. [8], 466, [2], 38 pp. Illustrated with 3 folding engraved plates, numerous woodcut text figs. 8vo., 205 x 130 mm, bound in contemporary English full calf, gilt-ruled spine, gilt- stamped red morocco spine label. Glasgow: Andrew Foulis, 1781. A handsome octavo version of The Elements of Euclid printed by the famous Glasgow University printers Robert (1707-76) and Andrew Foulis (1712-75) first issued in quarto in 1756. Best known for their simple yet elegant printings of carefully edited classics, this work is no exception. Dr. Robert Simson's corrections and additions to Theon and early editors in this edition were among the most important in clarifying Euclid's theorems. In addition, Simson's demonstrations were among the most clearly illustrated. Simple in-text woodcut diagrams appear next to the geometrical ideas they highlight in a harmonious mise en page. Some slight wear to the binding, still a fine crisp copy, and presumably one of the copies which Gaskell referes to as being printed on slightly better paper. PROVENANCE: Andras Gédéon with his ex-libris on front paste-down. In 2006 Gédéon published a book entitled: Science and Technology in Medicine: Based on Ninety-nine Landmark Publications form Five Centuries using his own library as source material. Gaskell 648. He was active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (323–283 BC). His Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics (especially geometry) from the time of its publication until the late 19th or early 20th century.
