Item Description: New York: Simon and Schuster, 195559, 1955. 4 works, quarto. Original pictorial cloth or boards, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jackets. Eloise with neat stamp (and accession number) of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Research Library on front pastedown; Christmastime with neat presentation inscription; doll in excellent condition and with the original box (Eloise label still intact and the box maker's stamp on the underside). Overall a very good set. Colour illustrations throughout by Hilary Knight. First editions, first printings. Presentation copy of Eloise in Paris with lengthy inscription from the author (on page opposite title): "For my darling Fairfax - with a little petite of every thing that's choisie, because because because, you are! Love love love Kay and Moi Eloise xx". Eloise in Moscow is inscribed on the title page by the illustrator: "Hilary Knight Dec 3 95". "When four Eloise dolls adorned the cover of the December 1957 issue of 'Good Housekeeping', Santa Claus was not prepared. No one was. Just before Thanksgiving '57, Simon & Schuster had published the highly anticipated sequel book, Eloise in Paris, but a brand new 21 inch Eloise rag doll was making quite a splash of its own. An ad campaign for Cannon Sheets featured the Eloise doll. Department stores across America were spotlighting the dolls. FAO Schwarz included the Eloise doll in its Christmas '57 mail order catalog. Even the most popular magazine in America, 'Life', weighed-in with a spread showing a little girl surrounded by Eloise dolls, clothes, merchandise, and, most spectacularly two 43 inch, larger-than-life-size dolls that Eloise illustrator Hilary Knight recently joked were 'a little scary'" (Sam Irvin, "The Rawther [sic] Definitive History of the Eloise Doll", Antique Doll Collector, August 2001 - archived by the Kay Thompson website). The doll is remarkably scarce when accompanied by the original packing. Bookseller Inventory # 106361

New York: Random House, 1958. First printing, signed by Hilary Knight on the preliminary leaf. Quarto (10 7/8 x 7 7/8 in; 278 x 200 mm). Unpaginated (24 ff). Exuberantly illustrated throughout with many double-page spreads. Publisher's red glazed pictorial boards. Illustrated endpapers. In first issue dust jacket coded 9-58 (Sept. 1958). Minimal wear at spine extremities otherwise a fine copy in the original (price-clipped, otherwise fine) color pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a scarlet linen slipcase.Kay Thompson (1909-1998) is best known today as the creator of the Eloise children's books but she began her career as a composer, musician, actress, singer, and vocal coach to such stars as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, and June Allyson. Thompson lived at the Plaza Hotel in New York City - home to Eloise. The books were partly inspired by the antics of her goddaughter, Liza Minnelli, daughter of Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli. But later, when asked if this was true Thompson replied, "I am Eloise." The four books in the series, illustrated by Hilary Knight, are Eloise (Simon & Schuster, 1955), Eloise in Paris (Simon & Schuster, 1957), Eloise at Christmastime (Random House, 1958) and Eloise in Moscow (Simon & Schuster, 1959). Each follows the adventures of the precocious six-year-old Eloise. All were bestsellers upon release and have been adapted into television projects. She also composed and performed a Top 40 hit song, "Eloise" (Cadence Records, 1956). Film buffs will recall Thompson as Maggie Prescott, the flamboyant, Diana Vreeland-like editor of the fashion magazine, Quality, in Funny Face (1957) starring Fred Astaire as a photographer ala Richard Avedon, which opens with Thompson's now famous showpiece number, "Think Pink!". Item Description: New York: Simon & Schuster, 1955. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. Knight, Hilary (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Hilary Knight. First edition, first printing. Publisher's cream cloth, with an illustration of Eloise to the front board in black, lettered in black and maroon; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with Knight's illustration of Eloise drawing on a vanity mirror to the front panel, black and white photographs of the author and illustrator to the rear panel. Very good, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine and board edges, fold-out page (13-16) slightly loose at the head but still firmly bound into the text block, bright and clean pages; price-clipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor chipping to the extremities, small chip to the spine head, some rubbing to the hinges, light toning to the spine and rear panel, a few light spots of minor soiling to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a clean copy of the classic children's book. Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown Ups is the first book in Kay Thompson's series featuring the rambunctious child protagonist Eloise, a resident of the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Eloise, like the author herself, is vivacious, charming, and spunky; Thompson herself was an actress and singer, as well as one of the first women to wear fashionable pants - a bold move in the 1940s. Indeed, while many cite her goddaughter Liza Minnelli as an inspiration for the character, Thompson insists that she, also a resident of the Plaza, largely based Eloise on herself. The other novels in Thompson's series feature Eloise in a series of adventures and include Eloise in Paris (1957), Eloise at Christmastime (1958) and Eloise in Moscow (1959). Item Description: Simon and Schuster, 1955. Hardbound. First edition. Quarto. The pullout (pages 13-16) is present but detached (bright with no tears). Original decorated cloth; original dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the original Eloise -- a work initially meant for adults (its re-release in 1969 was aimed at children). This book spawned three further tales of the girl who lives on "the tippy-top floor" of the Plaza hotel (and one posthumous book). Thompson's goddaughter, Liza Minelli, has been cited as a possible model for Eloise, as has Thompson herself. Laid in is a slip correcting text on p. 50 -- "Lily Dache" to "Coco Chanel.". Cloth with some light wear at ends of spine, slight toning, a few old tape adhesions; jacket spine panel lacking, some chipping, inner flaps detached but present. Bookseller Inventory # 12329
