Le but des plutôt de confronter l'imaginaire au réel, dans le cadre de la Chine du début du XXème siècle.

Le livre ne donne aucune date, ni ne précise aucun lieu , une gageure pour un journal de voyage, mais conserve le « je » de rigueur. Sans lien entre eux, en apparence, vingt- sept chapitres emblématiques tendent à rendre la quintessence des diverses expériences, vécues et inventées ».(Pierre Saunier, Catalogue Victor Segalen, l'exote, 2010). Elle s'est longtemps dérobée au public en raison de ses rares éditions à tirage restreint. . "Pour Ségalen l'exotisme ne signifie nullement les menues bizarreries d'un dépaysement pittoresque. L'exotisme, c'est l'esthétique du divers, c'est la présence visible de tout ce qui est "Autre", c'est le profond désir de tout ce qui n'est pas soi. Ségalen n'est pas et ne sera jamais un poète populaire. Son oeuvre rigoureuse, assez hautaine, totalement étrangère à l'anecdote, à l'effusion sentimentale, très claire et très grisante cependant". Il fut rédigé lors de son retour en France entre le 9 septembre 1914 et le 6 février 1915, comme il le précise sur le manuscrit, à bord du Paul Lecat. L'écrivain reprend son texte en novembre 1916, avant de repartir en Chine début 1917, abandonnant son manuscrit sans jamais le reprendre. C'est Jean Lartigue, ami intime de l'écrivain, et son compagnon avec Gilbert de Voisin lors des grandes missions archéologiques chinoises en 1909 et 1914, qui en établira l'édition.
