About this Item: Boston: William D. Ticknor & Company, 1848, 1848. Duodecimo. Original dun cloth, title gilt to spine, large gilt floral wreath to the centre of both boards contained within blind panelling, cream surface paper endpapers. A little rubbed, spine ends chipped, short split at head of front joint, hinges a little cracked, light toning, but overall very good. Sixth edition, one year after the first. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Sarah Butler from her friend, Fanny [Kemble,] December 25th/'45," and with the Butler Place bookplate to the front pastedown. Sarah was Fanny Kemble's elder daughter, named for her aunt, the great tragedienne Sarah Siddons. When Kemble's abolitionism forced her separation from her plantation-owning husband Pierce Butler, her daughters remained in his custody. In 1848 she was touring England, in an attempt to rehabilitate her career, when she was " summoned to America, where her husband filed divorce proceedings on the grounds of desertion; batteries of expensive lawyers were hired on both sides, but Butler finally agreed to a settlement without the formality of a trial, to prevent revelation of evidence extremely embarrassing to him. It was a long and bitter divorce, but it was settled with surface amicability; Fanny was to have $2500 a year and access to the children, who were to live with their father. Butler tried every stratagem to keep from fulfilling the conditions, to the extreme pain of Fanny, who resumed her maiden name" (ODNB). An extremely emotive piece: a Christmas gift, inscribed in the midst of a highly contested divorce, by a mother to her 13-year-old daughter, "her friend." A number of passages have been marked in the margins in pencil, including these lines: "Talk not of wasted affection, affection was never wasted;/ If it enrich not the heart of another, its waters, returning/ Back to their springs, like the rain, shall fill them full of refreshment ". About this Item: Cambridge. Printed at the Riverside Press. 1893, 1893. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. With illustrations by F.O.C. Darley Large-Paper edition. Limited to 150 copies, of which this is number 150. Hardcover, 157 pages. Printed in thick, hand-made paper. Bound in full vellum with gold lettering and decorations on the title and spine. Original plain red dustjacket is present, with lettering on the spine. DJ is edgeworn and missing some pieces, but it is present, such as it is. A most beautiful edition, with fine illustrations by Felix Octavius Carr Darley. This edition is a bit of a puzzle – the Riverside Press issued countless editions of Longfellow’s writings in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Darley illustrations first appeared as early as 1879. In 1886 they issued a Large-Paper edition with vellum spines (in 11 volumes). But I can find no other copies of this Large Paper single volume in a full-vellum, limited edition of 150 hand-numbered copies. Evangeline was first published in 1847. This edition coincides with the 46th anniversary of its printing, so it doesn’t even seem like a normal anniversary edition. But it is as nice an edition as you are likely to see. Measures 5.5” x 8”. About this Item: Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis, 1905. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Quarto. 132 pages. Color frontispiece and illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy. Red cloth illustrated hardcover with gilt stamped title on front cover and spine. Illustrated end papers. Covers are worn and faded with light soil. Corners bumped. Hinges slightly cracked. Fair condition. This particular copy was a wedding gift to Miss Elizabeth Elliott Lumpkin. The inscription on the front paste down reads: "Every Man and Woman Whose Autograph Appears in this Book is an Admirer, Friend, Lover of Elizabeth Elliott Lumpkin. x These names are arranged as a memento of the Veteran Re-Union at Rome, Georgia, September, 1904, and the Addresses at Brunswick, Oct. 31, 1904, with its accompanying Social Events. x The whole is presented to Miss Lumpkin on her marriage to Dr. Eugene Byron Glenn, Dec. 21, 1905, with the Love, Prayers, and best wishes of Harry Cassil, Jennie Cassil, and Leila Cassil." On the right front flyleaf is the written heading "Clement A, Evans Chapter, No 138 U.D.C. Brunswick, Georgia." 11 women from the chapter signed their names on the page. On the blank verso of the half title page is the written heading "Officers of Camp John B. Gordon, No. 1586 U.C.V. Brunswick, Georgia." Below the heading are 7 written names of Confederate veterans including their regiments and rank. Harry Cassil's name is written at the top of the list. Cassil was in the 1st Missouri Cavalry and was Captain Commander (of the U.C.V. Chapter). Cassil resided in Brunswick from 1899 until his death in 1908. A damp-stained loose illustration of the Confederate battlefield flag is laid inside the front cover. No other ephemera related to the wedding or the social events of the reunions exists. From the January 1906 issue of the Confederate Veteran: "In Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbia, S.C., on December 21, 1905, Miss Elizabeth Elliott Lumpkin, "The Daughter of the United Confederate Veterans", was married to Dr. Eugene Bryon Glenn of Asheville, N.C. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Capers who was a General in the Confederate Army." The Confederate Veteran (uncustomary) dedicated a whole page of this issue to the wedding including a photograph of the wedding group. The bride's father was Colonel W. W. Lumpkin. About this Item: Ernest Nister, and in New York by E. P. Dutton & Co. Printed in Bavaria, London, 1907. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good+. Later edition. Later edition. 5-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches, 6, [5]-160pp., Front cover is beautifully decorated in dark green and red floral design with beautiful gilt stamping of title and author. All page edges gilt. Decorated endpapers with overall spotting to front and back, portraying Acadians traveling from home -- endpapers bear printed signature of A. A. Dixon. All twelve full page color plates and 40 small in-text colour Illustrations are charming and very attractive. Small B&W in-text illustrations also throughout the book. Very light rubbing to corners and spine ends with a couple of very minor spots on back cover, otherwise very good+ condition. The text of the title page reads: Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Illustrated by Arthur Dixon. 1856. British Library holds a similar copy and dates this book circa 1907 (not the printed 1856 date on the title page). Given the artist A.A. Dixon was born in 1872, clearly he did not paint these illustrations till much later that 1856 therefore the circa publication date of 1907 makes sense. In 1713, Acadia, or, as it is now named, Nova Scotia, was ceded to Great Britain by the French. Some time after, war having again broken out between the French and British in Canada, the Acadians were accused of having assisted the French, and the British Government ordered them to be removed from their homes, and dispersed throughout the other colonies, at a distance from their much loved land. The poem is descriptive of the fate of some of the persons involved in these calamitous proceedings. Arthur Augustus Dixon (British, 1872-1959), was already working as an artist by 18, and is best remembered for his dozens of illustrated books from Ernest Nister, Collins Clear-Type, and Blackie & Sons.
