Item Description: Hodder & Stoughton, 1934. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good++. Dust Jacket Condition: Good++. Fourth impression, printed December 1934. Blue boards with gilt titles to spine; boards show some marks and signs of user/shelf wear, most notably across head and tail of spine. Interior clean and free of previous owner signatures or annotations, but fore-edges are foxed and there is some foxing evident throughout the book, but heaviest towards the front and rear endpapers. However, paper is still bright and plates largely unaffected. All plates in place, including tissue-guarded frontispiece. Three of the four listed maps are intact and in very good condition; the fourth and largest - Mount Everest and the Group of Chomo Lunga - is, as per the erratum slip bound in at pp 7, "missing; this was destoyed by enemy action , and it is impossible to replace it." Unclipped d/j is reasonably clean, although the spine and a part of the rear of the wrapper are tanned, and there is some wear across most extremities, especially across the head edge; small stain to lower part of spine and small blob of what feels like the residue of adhesive, probably from a previous sale sticker, towards the bottom of the front of the wrapper. Photographs will be uploaded for reference, but please feel able to ask for more, if interested. This book weighs nearly 3kg, and postage outside the UK will be charged at cost, which will undoubtedly be more than quoted online. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to support British Heart Foundation's work in the field of heart disease (Reg CHarity No 225971). Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Item Description: Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1936. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 5th Impression. We offer a nice bright example of this graphic account of the fourth British attempt to scale Mount Everest, which is inscribed on the half-title page by the author and leader of the expedition, Hugh Ruttledge: 'Best wishes from Hugh Ruttledge Feb. 1938'. This book is the first popular edition consisting of the narrative which forms the major part of the original account, which was first published in 1934. The volume is bound in blue cloth with titling in black on the spine and front cover and the text comprises 299 pages including index. There is a black and white photographic frontispiece and 16 other photographic plates, plus a folding map at rear of volume. The book is slightly faded at head and tail of spine corresponding to some loss on the spine of the dust-jacket; there is also small dent in the cloth on the top edge of the front cover. Neat inked owner's name (Clio R. Caridia) on title-page. Otherwise, the book is in bright, clean condition in a price-clipped dust-jacket. The jacket has a triangular area of loss (to a depth of one-inch) at head of spine and the last two letters of the title 'Everest' are missing. The tail of spine also has loss to a depth of a quarter-inch; the rear panel has a small brown stain near the bottom edge adjoining the spine. Notwithstanding detailed points noted, overall, the wrapper is bright and clean for its age and is now protected with a clear conservation sleeve. This copy with its rare signature is pleasing and nice to handle. Digital photographs available upon request. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 001359
