One-half leather binding, corners rubbed to the board, heaD of spine chipped, black leather label partially chipped Heel of spine has three small paper dots, for some sort of reference although the interior is unmarked except for a penciled number on the title page. Leaves are pleasingly bright, which make the 114 engraved illustrations that much more attractive and interesting. Double columned with each column counting as a page, 1644 columns (or about 820 normal paging), plus two regular pages unnumbered. Questions welcome. Images can be made upon request.

Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefn Tilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. In the original publisher's uniform full cloth bindings. Continued from title page Forming a complete history of the year, months, and seasons. Including accounts of the weather, rules for health and conduct, remarkable and important anecdotes, facts and notices, in chronology, antiquities, topography, biography, natural history, art, science, and general literature; derived from the most authentic sources, and valuable original communications, with poetical elucidations, for daily use and diversion. William Hone (June 3, 1780 November 6, 1842) was an English writer, satirist and bookseller. His victorious court battle against government censorship in 1817 marked a turning point in the fight for British press freedom. Among Hone's most successful political satires were The Political house that Jack built (1819), The Queen's Matrimonial Ladder (1820), Ill favour of Queen Caroline, The Man in the Moon (1820) and The Political Showman (1821), all illustrated by Cruikshank. Many of his squibs are directed against a certain "Dr Slop," a nickname given by him to Dr (afterwards Sir John) Stoddart, of The Times. In researches for his defence he had come upon some curious and at that time little trodden literary ground, and the results were shown by his publication in 1820 of his Apocryphal New Testament, and in 1823 of his Ancient Mysteries Explained. In 1826 he published the Every-day Book, in 1827-1828 the Table-Book, and in 1829 the Year-Book. All three were collections of curious information on manners, antiquities and various other subjects. Three volumes rebacked in cloth, with gilt titles to spine. Externally, sound. There is some wear to the extremities including some rubbing to the boards and edges resulting in some damage to the surface of the paper. The books have been rebacked with cloth spines and the original boards. Hinges are strained but all covers are firmly attached. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the cords are exposed in a few places. Pages are generally clean with some spotting in places and the odd handling mark. Some of the page edges, mainly to the front of the books, are a little tattered with some small close tears. The frontispiece in volume I has been repaired to the reverse with archive paper. The writer, bookseller and satirist William Hone "was a thoroughly honest and conscientious man, and deserves to be remembered for his sacrifices on behalf of the freedom of the press and cheap literature." (DNB) His victorious court battle against government censorship in 1817 marked a serious turning point in the fight for British press freedom. The present works, the first of which is dedicated to Charles Lamb, were warmly commended by Lamb, Scott, and Robert Southey, who remarked that he had not seen any miscellaneous books that were so well worth having.
