About this Item: Madrid - Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, 1948. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A Spanish book on Dr Huarte and psychological differential practices. Bound in the original wraps. Third Edition. In Spanish. Juan Huarte de San Juan or Juan Huarte y Navarro (c1530-1592) was a Spanish physician and psychologist. Huarte published the first edition of his Examen de ingenios para las ciencias in 1575, which won him a European reputation. Huarte's treatise is historically interesting as the first attempt to show the connection between psychology and physiology. Some examples of the chapter titles are: 'Biography of Dr Huarte of San Juan', 'Formal Content of the Review Focus', 'Philosophical Content of the Examination', and 'Consideration of Influence on Spain. 'Condition: The binding is firm. The hinges are cracked. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping,with loss, and some browning. Internally the pages aregenerally clean, with browning to the page edges. Overall the condition is good only, due to damaged hinges. Seller Inventory # 016687

Huarte's Examen, first published in 1575, was ''the first attempt to show the connection between psychology and physiology'' (Garrison-Morton). Carew's translation, the first surviving English edition (a fragment of a ca. 1592 edition is in the BL), was first published by Islip in 1594 and again, with minor changes, in 1596."The souls of all men are equal, according to Huarte, but the four bodily humours occur in different proportions in each man, and other factors influencing his growth and aptitudes include his food and drink, his climate and nationality, the conjunction of the stars at his birth, and his domestic life and education.
