About this Item: Christie's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 3rd - 5th October, 1990, 1990. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 383 pp, numerous ills, (many in colour). 1128 lots. From the introduction: "[Mr Kissner's] life-long devotion to Rome naturally made him turn to books and prints dealing with the art, history and literature of ancient, medieval and baroque Rome, and the civilizing influence of the City on the regions and peoples incorporated in its empire. His library finally grew to include well over 4,000 rare books, all of which are offered for sale in the present auction catalogue So many splendid, illustrated books form part of the Kissner Collection that it is difficult to single out the finest for mention in this short introduction. Mr. Kissner evidently bought most of his books in Europe, from Italian dealers as well as from the English trade and less often in the sale-rooms. Many of his most important acquisitions came from E. P. Goldschmidt & Co., notably the superb set of Lafreni's Speculum from the Pecci-Blunt Collection. Other purchases such as the Northwick copy in contemporary French morocco of Hamilton's Antiquities were made through Lathrop C. Harper, Inc., of which Mr. Kissner was the principal owner from 1968 to 1979. (His set of Piranesi also has a Northwick provenance). Finally, his extraordinary run of Mirabilia Romae deserves brief mention (even if he missed a copy of the Freitag edition in its original vellum wrapper, in the Doheny sale), since they were not acquired in a block purchase but patiently identified and hunted down one by one. The sheer number of these exceedingly rare early guide-books to Rome forms a true testimony to his tenacity and collecting stamina." With indexes of authors and of owners and binders. Wrappers heavily creased, pp 209/210 detached and restapled in, well-thumbed and heavily annotated with scribbled prices, names, notes and marks - a working copy. List of prices realized and buyers loosely laid in, somewhat torn and creased. Seller Inventory # ABE-20428

About this Item: Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 7th February 1984, 1984. Printed wrappers, 8vo, unpaginated, approximately 64 pp, facs. 387 lots. From H. A. Feisenberger's preface: "Walter Pagel continued in his father's footsteps and enormously enlarged our knowledge and understanding of medical history. He abandoned the old method of showing the progress of science in a kind of linear progress of continuing discoveries and achievements conditioned largely by standards of technical equipment. He showed us that in a proper historical method there can be no separation of scientific and non- scientific - what he called the "dark side" of science - influences and that even philosophical systems which today might be considered as "irrational" cannot be neglected. His interests were mainly the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the significance of ancient mythology, alchemy and hermeticism, the Neo-Platonic, gnostic and other mediaeval sources are fully taken into account in his investigations of his three heroes: Paracelsus, Helmont and Harvey. .Aristoteles and Galenus are here in a few early editions, ending with Kuehn's great collected edition of Galen, a triumph of nineteenth-century editorship of a classic and now very rare. Classical antiquity lived on in much of sixteenth- and seventeenth- century alchemy and symbolism and there are some rare alchemical and Rosicrucian tracts and works on the Kabbala. General philosophy, in particular Neo-Platonism, and the philosophy of religion are not neglected and there is a considerable section on mysticism. Paracelsus is, of course, well represented including the "Handapparat" for Dr. Pagel's Paracelsian studies; a number of editions of Helmont, a few only of Harvey, but some interesting Harveiana: Argoli, Riolanus, Caspar Hoffman, Langly, Mardi a Kronland are here. In philosophy and metaphysics, mention should perhaps be made of that great classic on the Kabbala, Knorr von Rosenroth, Kabbala Denudata, 1677-1864 and Giorgio's De Harmonia, 1525, both of extreme rarity." Very Good. List of prices realized and buyers loosely laid in, Seller Inventory # ABE-32043

From the introduction to the catalogue of the first portion: "The Tudor age attracted [Manning] strongly, and his collection included letters from most of the leading figures.:Henry VII (written in the new Italian hand by his secretary, Pietro Carmeliano), Henry VIII - a youthful galant letter to accompany a gift of falcons to a lady, Elizabeth I - a beautiful piece of calligraphy perhaps in the hand of Roger Ascham, Thomas Cromwell, Latimer, Leicester, Burghley, Essex and Nicholas Bacon. . From Germany comes a magnificent letter of Luther's to his friend and supporter, Johann Lang, giving the first news of Melancthon's marriage. .The musical manuscripts and autograph letters of musicians include nearly all the composers of importance from the Elizabethan period to the present Century. S. Very Good.
