He became famous in the 1860s as the first modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy people of central Africa. Includes 72*illustrations and maps. xviii+480pp. Three-quarter bound in black leather with marbled paper covered boards to remainder. Boards heavily rubbed and scuffed. Two nicks that pierce the leather on spine. The both the upper and lower joints at both the head and foot are split leaving the boards attached but a little tender. A segment of title page, approx.1.5cm*4cm cut out, no text is affected. Endpapers and pastedowns foxed with occasional light foxing to various pages.

Folding map bound at the rear missing, front edge of first two sheets of catalog have old archival repair. Minor wear at the crown, hinges and tips else near fine. Internally fine, pages and plates bright white with no foxing - rare to find as such. French-American anthropologist Paul Du Chaillu spent nearly four years on his first expedition to Central Africa covering 8,000 miles. He brought back numerous specimens of exotic birds and confirmed the existence of the gorilla. His account is a seminal work on Equatorial Africa.
