A free discourse concerning truth and error,: EDWARDS, John

About this Item: London: printed for Jonathan Robinson Daniel Brown Andrew Bell and John Wyat, 1701. 8vo., xlviii + 483 + (1)pp., contemporary panelled calf with gilt lettered spine label, short splits to leather joints at head of spine, but still a fine, crisp, copy. First edition. This was but one of what John Locke called 'the bespatterings of Mr. Edwards's dunghill' written by 'a warrior that hath no other ammunition'. Although Edwards (1637-1716) is best known for his controversy with Locke - he attacked Locke's Reasonableness of Christianity> as soon as it was published in 1695 - Edwards was an energetic controversialist, attacking writers he disagreed with. 'Though a Calvinist, his favourite targets were not Anglicans, even those of the High Church party, but rather 'atheists' and 'Socinians' - indeed he included the latter among the former. . Edwards' manner in controversy was reckless and nasty'. [Vere Chappell in the Dictionary of 17th Century British Philosophers>]. Seller Inventory # 21543
