About this Item: Christophorum Plantinum, haeredes Jo. Steelsii & Philippum Nutium., Antwerp., 1573. 33 x 21.5cm. 3 works in one volume (part 1): 10 leaves, 886 [numbered columns]; (part 2): 368 [numbered columns], 6 leaves; (part 3): 390 [numbered columns], 3 leaves. Between a10 and A[1] are two stubs which might be cancels, but the collation agrees with Adams. In the Sextus, a superb 3/4 -page woodcut of pope Boniface VIII receiving the book of Decretals from a kneeling St Gregory, his colleagues grouped behind. This cut is repeated in the Clementinae. With 3 woodcut tables of consanguinity and affinity, and the woodcut devices of Plantin & co. (signed P. B.), and that of Nuyts alone (on the two titlepages). With engraved initials. Contemporary full parchment, manuscript title on spine, remains of ties. Adams B2447. The three last works, with commentaries, which complete the Canon Law (Corpus Juris Canonici) in one folio volume, printed with Papal licence by Plantin and his associates. The preceding Decretals are 1. Gratian [see our bookshop number ch14.1342] and 2. Decretalium of Gregory IX. The second and third parts in the present volume were farmed-out by Plantin for printing to Philip Nuyts, and bear the latter's own two titlepages with the date 1572 and his printer's mark (in one of these, a reader anxious not to be prurient, has inked out a lascivious image). The titlepage of the first (dated 1573), includes the names of all three of Plantin's associate printers (although Steelsius's heirs were not involved in this book), together with a specially prepared woodcut by Pieter van Borcht, incorporating the devices of all three. This volume then, contains 1. the Decretals of Boniface VIII (1298), called 'Liber Sextus' from being intended as a supplement to Gregory IX's five books, 2. Constitutiones of Clement V, 1313, 3. Extravagantes & Extravagantes Communes of John XXII (1500). These are all in the official versions authorized in 1563 and which Plantin first printed in octavo. This is his first edition in folio. A final text was promulgated in 1582, but by then Plantin was in financial difficulty and not involved. The text is surrounded on all three borders with commentaries by Egidio Perrino, Jacobus Fontanus, Johannes Andrae, Philippi Franci and others. Additional glosses are in smaller type. Early Spanish owner inscriptions on titlepage, some gatherings browned, binding a little used and crumpled. A magnificent example of the Plantin Press from its best years. Envíos para España: el pago contra reembolso conlleva un recargo de 4 Euros. Seller Inventory # ch14.1478

About this Item: Sub signo Aquilae renovantis, Venetiis, 1604. This is a collection of the decretals of Boniface VIII, born Benedict Gaetani (ca. 1235?1303, pope from 1294). Boniface was a distinguished canonist and defender of the rights of the papacy. He did much to organize canon law, compiling the decrees of his predecessors into five books, to which he added his own Liber Sextus ("sixth book"). To Boniface's own decretals were later appended the Constitutiones of Boniface's immediate successor, Clement V (reigned 1305?14), the Extravagantes of John XXII (reigned 1316?34), and finally, in 1500?03, the Extravagantes Communes. The works in this volume form the third of three volumes ? together with the Decretum of Gratianus and the Decretales of Gregory IX ? printed by the Socios Aquilae Renovantis in 1604 as part of a complete set of the Corpus Juris Canonici or code of canon law. In this edition the legal text is surrounded by commentary, to which supplementary sidenotes have been added. It is printed with an ornate, very large woodcut printer's device on the title-page, and historiated woodcut initials. Folio. [4] ff., 948, 384, 396 numb. col., [12] ff., lacking a blank. On Boniface, see: New Catholic Encyclopedia, II, 671?73. Half vellum over green paper with a brown leatherette title label. Title-page has a tear from the base of the page into the imprint information, repaired on the verso with paper. Inked marginalia in one place, fol. *2r. Occasional spots of foxing and staining, most noticeably on the title-page and first few leaves. Seller Inventory # 2796

Sextus decretalium liber in Lugdunensi coniclio editus: BONIFACE VIII

About this Item: Joannes Kerbriand, Paris, 1531. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. POPULAR TEXTS OF CANON LAW. 4 works in 1, 8vo. ff. 78 [ii]; 36; 44; 20. Lettre Batârde, double column in red and black throughout, first and second titles within elaborate woodcut borders of jesters, fools, grotesques and foliage, full page printed diagram on last leaf of first work, fine woodcut initials in several series, summaries indicated with a charming red finger. One or two inksplashes here and there, a few very light spots to some leaves, a very good and clean copy in contemporary French calf gilt, covers with central floral tool within a gilt- and blind-ruled frame and fleurons at corners, narrow tear with lack to front cover, two wormholes, small parts of spine lacking, joints cracked. Early underlinings, early ms motto in blank portion of title 'In valesta vera virtus' and 'Joannes' in the same hand on final page, contemporary ex-libris at head of title page of the Capuchins of Valence, 19th-century library stamp of a French seminary beneath. Early editions of four very popular texts of canon law, including the Decretals of Boniface VIII, one of the greatest jurists of his age. Although printed with their own title pages and sold separately, these works are sometimes preserved together, as here. Boniface VIII's decretals were first published in 1465, these works were published together in Basel in 1511 in folio; these are reimpressions of the Paris editions of 1523. Decretals are Papal letters that formulate decisions in ecclesiastical law. These make up most of the 'Corpus Juris'. They cover such topics as the ordination and privileges of priests and the election of bishops; the sacraments, including baptism (with a woodcut table of impediments) and the veneration of relics. The first text is the great work on canon law by Boniface VIII, who added a great deal to ecclesiastical legislation, which came to be known as the Liber Sextus (the Decretals of Gregory IX (1239) had consisted of five books). The Liber Sextus is glossed by Giovanni d'Andrea, one of the greatest canonists of his age, and the woodcut illustration on the final page is his 'Arbor Consanguinitatis'. The second text is by Clement V, who inaugurated the Avignon Papacy, after the condemnation of Boniface VIII as a heretic under pressure from the French King, Philip the Fair. The Extravagantes are the collections of decretals that were not included in any of the three official collections of decretals (including the Liber Sextus); they should be found in all complete editions of the Corpus Juris Canonici. When John XXII (1316-1334) published the decretals known as the Clementines, there already existed some pontifical documents, obligatory upon the whole Church but not included in the Corpus Juris; hence these decretals were called Extravagantes. In 1325 Zenselinus de Cassanis added a gloss to twenty constitutions of Pope John XXII, and named this collection Viginti Extravagantes pap Joannis XXII. The others were known as "Extravagantes communes", a title given to the collection by Jean Chappuis in the Paris edition of the Corpus Juris. He adopted the systematic order of the official collections of canon law, and classified in a similar way the Extravagantes commonly met with in the editions of the Corpus Juris. All four texts in this edition are rare: COPAC records one copy only of all four together (at Glasgow), and only one copy has sold at auction in the last 30 years; RLG records one copy only of three of the texts (at Harvard) and none of the Extravagantes communes. Adams B-2440 (part I only); Index Aureliensis 122.004 (part I only); not in BM STC Fr., Brunet or Graesse. Latin. Seller Inventory # L577

Jahrhunderts in Venedig sehr handliche, gut benutzbare, oftmals mächtige Corpus-Iuris-Ausgaben. Schon das Decretum Gratiani dieser Edition mit mehr als 2.000 Seiten ist drucktechnisch und auch buchbinderisch eine Meisterleistung.
