About this Item: Not stated - "Printed and Sold by the Booksellers", 1789. Full Leather Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Fourteenth Edition - Carefully Revised. 1789 Fourteenth edition. [xxxvi] and 329pp. plus a 7 page index, a frontispiece and 196 wood engravings. This is a scarce early edition of Samuel Croxall's translation of the fables of Aesop, and of other writers. Samuel Croxall (c.1690-1752) was an Anglican churchman, writer and translator, particularly noted for his edition of Aesop's Fables. The fables are told in this translation in an easy colloquial style and followed by 'instructive applications', and intended to be of particular value to children. Each fable is illustrated with a wood engraving. The book is bound in a later (probably 19th century) binding of full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label and simple blind stamped design with five raised bands on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected scuffing to the leather and slight fading to the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and, as may be expected from a book of this age, there is some browning and foxing. This is mostly limited to the page margins although a few pages are more heavily affected. There is an unrepaired tear of about 1 1/2" on the fore edge of page 23 and a very few other pages have small tears of about 1/4" on the fore edge. One of the original front free endpapers has been retained and has elegantly written name and address with a drawing of a swan (this is undated but probably 18th century). There is a later inscription on the back of the frontispiece dated 1861 where the ink has run a bit, and this has led to a small ink stain showing on the frontispiece. Size: 6.9" Tall.
