About this Item: none listed, A Philadelphie, 1823. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition Thus. [4], iv, 112 pages; Contemporary, probably original binding: calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards. Significant wear to the binding, sewing compromised, considerable foxing throughout -- but a complete copy of this rare American edition of an Aesop's fables, in French quatrains. Title page states: "Nouvelle edition dédié a la jeunesse." There is a dedication (in verse quatrains) to youth, page [3], signed with initials at the bottom -- "F. M." ["A LA JEUNESSE"] The French text appears to the version of Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde. The statement of a price in "sous" on the title page is odd, but one noted library holding a copy of this rare edition helps confirm that this "Philadelphie" stated in the imprint is the city in Pennsylvania; the American Antiquarian Society copy states in their catalogue entry: "Place: United States; Pennsylvania; Philadelphia." There are three OCLC numbers, but only six locations are scattered across the three accession numbers: Columbia, Dickinson College, Virginia Tech, Georgetown University, Millersville Univ., and AAS. See OCLC numbers: 1398897, 21709607, and 198424372. Who was F. M.? And, did the un-named Philadelphia printer or bookseller responsible for this charming book for young students of French accept 75 U.S. cents, rather than French "sous" for a copy? Given that 1 sous = 5 centimes and 1 livre, or franc = 20 sous, this 1823 price would not really make sense at 3 francs 15 sous, which would have been the price of a very expensive and luxurious volume, indeed. Keep in mind that Victor Hugo's 1830 'Les Misérables' informs us that "une flûte de pain" = 1 sou. Was this book really priced at an equivilent cost to 75 (wide) baguettes of bread? Perhaps our modern price is a bit low. Seller Inventory # 41589

About this Item: A La Haye, chez Laurens Berkoske le Fils, 1744., 1744. in-8. XVI. 62pp. (1f.blanc). Quelques rousseurs. Bon exemplaire rogné en tête seulement. Seller Inventory # 93860

About this Item: The Gregynog Press, Newtown, 1931. hardcover. Agnes Miller Parker (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto (8-1/4" x 12-1/4") in ochre levant morocco leather, top edge gilt, signed by George Fisher and William MacCance (the designer) at the Gregynog Press Bindery. The upper cover has three gilt rules, surrounding an inner rectangle outlined by multiple gilt rules of varying thickness, surrounding a design of onlaid brown calf in which the letters of "Esope" are ingeniously intertwined. "The Fables of" is printed above that in blind, and "Caxton" below in gilt. The rear cover simply has three gilt rules and the letters "GG" on an onlay of brown calf. The spine has five raised bands. Of a total of 250 copies, this is copy #14 of only 25 in this special binding. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker resulting in a book now regarded as one of the most accomplished examples of wood-engraving between the Wars. This book [No. 14/20] was subscribed for directly from The Gregynog Press by Ambassador William Castle Jr. (1878-1963). The book was published on 2 April 1932 for £12-12s-0d: (twelve guineas). Castle purchased his special copy on 20 July 1934 (there was always a delay between the publication date and the completion of the Special Bindings). He owned a total of 14 of the Press’s Special Bindings, as well as several copies of the ordinary (case) bindings. Castle purchased all his Gregynog Press books directly from the Press, commencing with THE MISFORTUNES OF ELPHIN which he bought in December 1929; his last was LYRICS AND UNFINISHED POEMS in May 1943. Castle did not purchase every book that the Press produced in the Special Bindings. A large part of his collection was sold at Samuel Freeman’s auction rooms in Philadelphia on 1 December 1971, but this copy was not included in that auction. There were several other Special Bindings that were not. It is believed that Castle gave away several of his Special Bindings as they were not included in the 1971 sale. Some rubbing to the spine and joints with mild chipping to the head; long vertical scratch to the front cover. Owner name on front endpaper; internally fresh and clean. A Very Good and scarce example of this beautiful book. Seller Inventory # 017357
