About this Item: 1600. Woodcut device on title page and portrait of Frischlin on verso of title page, ornaments, headpieces, initials throughout. Roman, italic and gothic type. 8vo (155 x 91mm). 135ff. Eighteenth-century boards, spine with gilt bands and title lettered in gilt on label in second compartment, ribbon page marker (boards stained and discoloured, spine bumped, corners worn). Strasbourg, Haeredum Bernhardi Iobini, First edition of this collection of facetiae, humorous, often obscene witticisms, stories and writings, from three of the form?s foremost fifteenth- and sixteenth-century practitioners. The facetiae are rather representative of the attitude and countenance ? if not the otherwise scholarly oeuvre ? of the first individual in this volume, German philologist, poet and mathematician Philipp Nicodemus Frischlin (1547-90). A teacher at Tubingen before he lost his job, he was threatened with prosecution for immorality, and was eventually imprisoned for his insubordinate attacks on ministers and the nobility, ?condemning [them] for their arrogant refusal to consider men with high academic titles as equals, and reprimanding nobles collectively for their lack of moral virtue and cruelty toward the peasantry? (MacHardy). He died while trying to escape out of the window of his prison cell in 1590. The frequently salacious tone of his facetiae is matched by those of Heinrich Bebel (1472-1518) and Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459); claimed by some as the ?primary German exponent of the genre? (Coxon), Bebel?s compositions are the German answer to those of Poggio. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper in nineteenth-century hand, dated 1810; consistent marginal annotations throughout (some lost due to trimming of pages). Some loss to text at head and fore-edges of pages due to trimming; waterstaining at foot of leaves, and worming of lower blank margins throughout. Consistent browning. Adams 1047. Brunet II, 1401. E. Bigi & A. Petrucci, 'Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459)', Treccani Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (Vol. XIII). S. Coxon, 'Friendship, Wit and Laughter in Heinrich Bebel's Facetiae', Oxford German Studies 36 (2007), 306-20. K. J. About this Item: ad Moenum, 1615. Couverture rigide. Brunet 1657, 1741. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition of this collection of humorous texts based primarily on smut and drink. Binding posterior mid nineteenth half glazed calf burgundy (back thinned) to nerves and gilt and cold. The book contains 12 texts by different authors whose titles are significant enough by their irreverent characters (you will notice several Disputatio but on cucurbits or right to joke). The text is written in Latin and not in the vernacular, which makes a violent satire against the learned and the church, which does not deceive when it placed the book in its index of prohibited books. Mattheus Delio de arte Jocandi, Nicodemi Frischlini in ebrietatem elegia De Peditu, eiusque Speciebus De Iure Potandi disputatio De Lustitudine Studentica De Cucurbitatione disputatio feudalis, Bonus Mulier sive of mulieribus De Osculis Iucunda dissertatio, De Natura Iure & Pennalium disputation, Obsopoeus Vincent de arte bibendi De Virginibus Inaugural Theses, floja cortum Versicale. About this Item: ad Moenum, Francofurti, 1615. 16mo pp. [iv], 452. Bound in contemporary calf with raised bands and gilt spine. Edges stained red. Title page printed in red and black, Some mid 17th century listings of the book being offered for sale on the front blank, from the library of J. B. Hazard. Contemporary ownership signature on the lower title page. The text is in Latin. The work contains 12 texts of different authors whose titles are sufficiently significant by their disrespectful characters The text is written in Latin and not in vulgar language, while in fact it is a violent satire against the learned ones and church, (which it did not fool as it placed the book in its index of the prohibited books). Wikipedia: "Frischlin was educated as a scholar of "Tübinger Stift" at the university of Tübingen, where in 1568 he was promoted to the chair of poetry and history. In 1575 for his comedy of Rebecca, which he read at Regensburg before the emperor Maximilian II, he was rewarded with the laureateship, and in 1577 he was made an imperial count palatine (Comes palatinus Caesareus) or Pfalzgraf. In 1582 his unguarded language and reckless life made it necessary that he should leave Tübingen, and he accepted a mastership at Laibach in Carniola (nowadays Ljubljana in Slovenia), which he held for about two years. Shortly after his return to the university in 1584, he was threatened with a criminal prosecution on a charge of immoral conduct, and the threat led to his withdrawal to Frankfurt am Main in 1587. For eighteen months he taught in the Brunswick gymnasium, and he appears also to have resided occasionally at Strasbourg, Marburg and Mainz. From the last-named city he wrote certain libelous letters, which led to his being arrested in March 1590. He was imprisoned in the fortress of Hohenurach, near Reutlingen, where, on the night of the 29th of November 1590, he was killed by a fall in attempting to let himself down from the window of his cell. This a study of comparative religion, with a discussion of the myths of the Algonkins, Iroquois, the Aztecs, and the Mayans as well as a discussions of hero myths in general. About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Illustrated with Several historiated woodcut initials and woodcut printers device. Small 8vo. Bound in full modern brown pigskin blindstamped in Renaissance style (with old endpapers), with a vellum lettering piece from the original binding affixed to front cover; spine with raised bands over binding cords. Printed by Ulrich Morhard, Tübingen 1542. First Tübingen edition; second or third complete edition. Text in Latin (with occasional words and passages in German). Dedicatory epistle from the first edition (dated May 1506) on leaf A2r,v. Rare early edition of Bebels celebrated collection of jokes and anecdotes (first printed in 1508), here complete in all its three books. (The third book first appeared in 1512.) To which is added a selection from the joke-book by the 15th-century Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini (compiled in 1451 and first printed ca.1470). Both collections were extremely popular, and both contain many stories which are bawdy or even obscene, and many are sharply anticlerical. Also included is the satirical Prognostica by Tübingen humanist Jakob Henrichmann (from which Rabelais freely adapted his Pantagrueline Prognostications), as well as Bebels Latin translation of the popular German folksong Ich stund an einem Morgen. Bebels Facetiae are most crucial in the printed history of erotic jokes and humor. (G. Legman, Rationale of the Dirty Joke, pg.24). In his preface to the 1512 edition of the Facetiae, Bebel tells the reader that although his stories are considered by some to be too lascivious and dirty, actually he had heard them all told by serious men at banquets, often in the presence of ladies (apud matronas). Bebels Facetiae has a lot in common with the earlier collection by Bracciolini. Both authors were well-known Humanists attempting to put into Latin earthy anecdotes originally told in Italian or German. The genre of facetiae, a Latin collection of jokes, often quite irreverent and racy, was a quintessential Renaissance phenomenon, an expression of delight in life, of intellectual and erotic freedom, and of pleasure in the skill and subtlety of literary creation. (Bruno Boesch (ed.), German Literature: A Critical Survey, pg.112.) Outer margin of title repaired without loss; outer margin cropped close to marginal notes. One leaf with a small hole in outer margin affecting two letters only; closed marginal tear to the final leaf (no loss); some dampstaining and discoloration. Early manuscript possession note (crossed out) to title page; some early underlinings and marginal pointing hands; one joke crossed through by a single line in ink; o/w generally clean with text readable throughout. Scarce. Seller Inventory # 6133

Facetiae facetiarum, hoc est, jocoseriorum fasciculus novus,: FACETIAE].

About this Item: Erman & Horn, Bibl. deutsche Univ. I, 7411; VD17 23:259247G; cf. Camden House history of German literature IV, p. 309; Gay & Lemmonyer II, cols. 215-216 (other eds.). Rare collection of popular farcical texts, inspired by the Facetiae (1474) of the Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini. Poggio wrote anti-clerical, bawdy and obscene stories, that enjoyed great popularity in the 16th century. He thereby showed that Latin was flexible enough to be written as a living language. His stories were soon imitated all over Europe. A collection of 12 titles, first published in 1600, was later placed on the Papal Index. The present collection, published by Augustin Ferber, increases the number of titles to 17. It mainly consists of mock medical dissertations and disputations and macaronic poetry about sex and drinking.Of particular interest are: Disputatio inauguralis, a mock disputation on the social law of drinking, with Bacchus as praeses and written by "Blasius Multibibus", a pseudonym often attributed to Richard Brathwait, who would translate this work into English in 1617 as A solemne joviall disputation, theoreticke and practicke; briefly shadowing the law of drinking; Delineatio summorum capitum lustitudinis studenticae, a burlesque and facetious macaronic Latin/German poem about students visiting brothels; and Discursus methodicus de peditu ejusque speciebus crepitus & visio (Methodical discourse on farting, and its species, sound and appearance), "this is the most elaborate case of intellectual in-joking on a scatological topic that I have so far found" (B.C. Bowen, "The 'honourable art of farting' in continental Renaissance literature", in: Fecal matters in early modern literature and art, 2017).With the bookplate of the neurologist Willem Albert Hofman (1915-2002) and some early underscoring in text. A very good copy, with only the paste-downs coming loose. Seller Inventory # A5LFN301U79O
