About this Item: Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1954. Original Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Joe Mugnaini (illustrator). First UK Edition. THE NOVEL: Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian story by Ray Bradbury, his first novel and regarded as one of his best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. The title refers to the temperature that Bradbury understood to be the autoignition point of paper. The novel has been the subject of various interpretations, primarily focusing on the historical role of book burning in suppressing dissenting ideas. In a 1956 radio interview, Bradbury stated that he wrote Fahrenheit 451 because of his concerns at the time (during the McCarthy era) about censorship and the threat of book burning in the United States. In later years, he stated his motivation for writing the book in more general terms. The novel has won various awards. In 1954, it won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature and also the Commonwealth Club of California Gold Medal. It has since won the Prometheus "Hall of Fame" Award in 1984 and a 1954 "Retro" Hugo Award, one of only three Best Novel Retro Hugos ever given, in 2004. CONTMPORARY REVIEWS: 'among the great works of the imagination written in English in the last decade or more.' - Galaxy Science Fiction. 'a savage and shockingly savage prophetic view of one possible future way of life' - Chicago Sunday Tribune. PUBLISHING DETAILS: A signed first printing of the first UK edition, published by Rupert Hart-Davis of London in 1954. 158 pages. Size: 20 x 14 cms (8" x 5.5"). Weight: 273g (0.6 pounds). CONDITION: I would rate the book as very good for its age. The original red cloth coves are sound overall, though with some marks and fading (see photos). The binding is still reasonably tight and secure. The text and frontispiece illustration by Joe Mugnaini are clean and free from foxing with just the occasional small mark and a little even age-toning. Ray Bradbury's signature is on white paper which has been mounted on the title page (see photo). The title and half title pages are faintly foxed and there are new front endpapers. There are some remnants of a press clipping showing on the back endpaper and two loose clippings which I have left in. With signed first editions going for over £1000, this is a chance to acquire a very reasonable example at a fraction of that cost. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 001556

About this Item: Gauntlet Press, Colorado Springs, CO, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Hardcover, F/F dj, as new unread copy. Slipcased, signed, numbered, and limited to 750 copies; still sealed in publishers shrinkwrap. Housed in a handsome wooden slipcase; includes the limited edition chapbook, The Dragon Who Ate His Tail. Ray Bradbury didn't sit down one day and decide to write his classic novel Fahrenheit 451. As with Something Wicked This Way Comes Bradbury's tale of censorship had its roots years earlier in at least 9 short stories or novellas. While published in 1953 the genesis of Fahrenheit 451 can be traced back to 1944. Over the next several years Bradbury tinkered with the idea in a number of short stories a few that have been collected a number of times, some that appeared just once and others that have remained unpublished . . . Until now. MATCH TO FLAME: The Fictional Paths to Fahrenheit 451 traces the roots of Fahrenheit 451 in Bradbury's earlier fiction. Edited by Donn Albright, the book is a must for those who have marveled at Fahrenheit 451. The centerpiece of the book, is of course, "The Fireman" a novella published in Galaxy Magazine in 1951. Signed by Bradbury, this is bound to become a classic edition for scholars looking into the history of Fahrenheit 451, collectors and readers of great fiction, and those interested in obscure and unpublished Bradbury material that will not see publication anywhere else.
