About this Item: Ballantine Books, New York, 1953. Hardcover; 1st Printing. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 1st edition/1st printing, 1953 1st edition. From the collection of famous sci-fi book collector(s) Robert and Diane Yaspan. Signed and Inscribed by the author in red felt-tip pen on a large piece of white paper that is NOT a bookplate (instead a piece of letter-sized stationery trimmed to fit) pasted on the book's front pastedown: 'Mar - 1974 For Robert Yaspan - This copy of the regular trade edition of "451" signed by Ray Bradbury.' Mr. Bradbury was of course differentiati ng between the 1st hardback trade edition owned by Mr. Yaspen vs. the asbestos-covered limited edition issued at the same time. The book is bound in red cloth with yellow printing (Curry binding D, no priority). Straight, clean, tight book with no soiling and no handwriting other than the author's in it, with crisp, clean pages, and with just a mere touch of shelfwear to spine ends/corners and 2 small 'very' slightly darkened cloth areas at the bottom edge of the boards. The price intact ($2.50) dustjacket is clean and crisp with some of the usual fading of the red '451' on the spine (though still quite legible), and with some small, shallow edge chips and tears along its edges, primarily at spine ends, upper back edge and flap fold ends, none affecting any dustjacket lettering or the design (less than it looks like in our photos; there's some flash glare from the DJ protector). The dustjacket is entirely original - no restoration. It is now protected by a clear, removable dustjacket cover. The book is housed in a custom red cloth slipcase dating to the Yaspans in the 1970s that is in excellent condition. Very handsome presentation, and excellent provenance! Made into a very good movie in 1966 by Francois Truffaut, starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner. This book is what really made Mr. Bradbury into a household name.; Signed by Author. About this Item: Ballantine Books, 1953. FIRST EDITION. THE COMPLETE ASBESTOS 'SF' COLLECTION *** HOT STUFF *** FAHRENHEIT 451, Ballantine Books, 1953, first edition, light wear to the spine edges, some soiling to the spine and boards as usual, else a tight vg copy without dust-wrapper as issued. Also contains THE PLAYGROUND & AND THE ROCK CRIED OUT. 1/200 copies SIGNED by the author and specially bound in Johns-Manville Quinterra, an asbestos material with exceptional resistance to pyrolysis. Certainly a high spot of modern literature which has seen few auction records from the major houses in the last 10 years. (A most interesting provenance to this copy. After my suggesting to the publisher of the first edition of FIRESTARTER by Stephen King (see below) that producing a special asbestos edition of this title could be a lot of fun, he, as many already know, did so. He obtained this copy now offered for sale by trading one of these 26 such bound copies of FIRESTARTER to Gerry de la Ree for one of de la Ree's copies of the asbestos bound Bradbury title. This is that very copy!) Retrospective HUGO winning novel for 1954. Among those titles listed in BALLANTINE BOOKS: THE FIRST DECADE, Bailiwick Books, 1987. Along with: FIRESTARTER, Phantasia Press, 1980, first edition, a faint discoloration about the size of a quarter to a blank section of the signature page (not interfering in any manner with any writing or printed text) with some off-setting of same on to a small area of the adjoining page (the last page of text), else fine without dust-wrapper or slip-case as issued. 1/26 lettered copies bound in asbestos cloth, this one being letter B and thus one of the publishers own copies !!! For the pair and the right to ownership of a complete science fiction asbestos collection (of which there cannot ever be more than 26 sets with probably less than a half-dozen extant now---).
