Fairfield's Pioneer history of Lassen County California,: Fairfield, Asa Merrill

About this Item: Published for the author by H. S. Crocker Company, San Francisco, 1916. Hardcover. Condition: g. First edition. Royal octavo. XXII, 506, [2]pp. Original burgundy cloth with pictorial gold stamping and lettering. Top edge gilt. Handwritten inscription at bottom of title page stating: 'Printed and bound under the supervision of John B. Swart.' Lassen County was formed on April 1, 1864 from parts of Plumas and Shasta Counties following the two-day conflict known as the "Sagebrush War", also called the Roop County War, that started on February 15, 1863. Due to uncertainties over the California border, the area that is now Lassen County was part of the unofficial Nataqua Territory and Roop County, Nevada during the late 1850s and early 1860s. The county was named after Peter Lassen, along with Lassen Peak, which is in adjoining Shasta County. Lassen was one of General John C. Fremont's guides, and a famous trapper, frontiersman and Indian fighter. He was murdered under mysterious circumstances near the Black Rock Desert in 1859, and his murder was never solved. Most of what is given in the following pages in the way of Indian troubles, historical reminiscences, etc., was learned from the men who took an active part in the events narrated, or from the men and women who lived in the country at that time. As a matter of course, after a lapse of fifty years, or more, their stories are more or less conflicting in the minor details; but in nearly every case the author has been able to find some account of what they told in the publications of those days, and in that and in other ways their stories have been verified. In what is given as original, unless otherwise stated, the date and the principal facts can be depended upon. This work is complete with its two b/w photographic reproductions as well as its large folding map at rear. Spine stained and sunned. Moderate rubbing along edges. Front hinge starting. Binding in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good condition. Seller Inventory # 33730
