Temple of the Fairies: The Yellow Dwarf;: d'Aulnoy, Marie Catherine;

About this Item: Vernor and Hood, London, 1804. Hardcover. Condition: g. First UK edition. 12mo. 296pp. 285, [1]pp. Contemporary three-quarter morocco over maroon peddled cloth, with gold lettering, tooling and ruling on spines. Raised bands. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece in first volume, and engraved title in both volumes. Marvelous collection of 13 fairy tales illustrated with 35 full-page and in-text engravings. Some tales are by Marie Catherine d'Aulnoy (1650/1651-1705), a French writer known for her fairy tales. When she termed her works contes de fées (fairy tales), she originated the term that is now generally used for the genre. Unlike the folk tales of the Grimm Brothers, who were born some 135 years later than d'Aulnoy, she told her stories in a more conversational style, as they might be told in salons. These stories were far from suitable for children ! The other tales are from Charles Perrault and the Arabian Knights (Zipes, "Victorian" XVII). Initials of previous owner and date on half-title page of first volume. Heavy foxing to frontispiece and first few pages of Vol. I. Sporadic foxing throughout. Tight copies in overall good+ condition. Rare English edition. Seller Inventory # 19744
