Item Description: The Folio Society 2008-2013, London, 2008. Book Condition: Fine. 12-volume set. Quartos [26cm] in brightly colored cloth decorated with gold and silver gilt and a variety of other colors, top edge colored, decorative endpaper. Each volume housed in a colored board slipcase. Color plates. All but two of the books are first printings thus. A complete and pristine set of the Folio Society’s exquisite 21st-century reissue of Andrew Lang’s seminal Victorian collection of fairy tales and folklore, "The Rainbow Fairy Books," or the "Fairy Books of Many Colours", etc.Lang's prismatic collections have delighted readers since the publication of The Blue Fairy book in 1889. The demand for them was so great that he continued to produce them long after he would have preferred not to (the inclusion of the "Olive", "Brown", and "Grey" volumes is a fairly clear indicator that he set to work with a more limited spectrum in mind!). A poet and critic, Lang also found time to amass strange and wondrous stories from all over the globe, not just Europe, and it is truly fascinating to see the common threads that run through all of our myths. Although children (and their parents) often assumed otherwise, Lang was the editor of these stories, not the author. His wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne Lang, was an accomplished linguist who translated many of the stories into English. The Blue Fairy Book: later printing, 2008. Illus. Charles van Sandwyk, intro.
