About this Item: Pook Press, United States, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Edmund Dulac (illustrator). Language: English. Brand new Book. This book forms part of our 'Pook Press' imprint, celebrating the golden age of illustration in children's literature. This work contains a collection of stories, written by Charles Perrault, Madame D'Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton. These individuals were among the first writers to bring magical children's stories into the literary mainstream, proving to their original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The stories in this particular text encompass favourites such as Perrault's 'Puss in Boots' and 'Riquet with the Tuft' as well as other less well-known classics such as D'Aulnoy's 'The Green Dragon', 'Princess Rosetta' and 'The Blue Bird' and Count Antony Hamilton's dazzling 'Mayblossom'. This book further contains a set of coloured illustrations by the master of his trade, Edmund Dulac (1882-1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these Old French tales as well as a rigorously painterly background. The end result was beautifully coloured images which further refined the wonderful stories of Perrault, D'Aulnoy and Hamilton; all presented together in this book. About this Item: Cassell & Co., Limited, London, 1928. Hardcover. First edition. 251pp. Large octavo [24.5 cm] Blue cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine. Good. The edges of the covers are rubbed and gently bumped. The underlying boards are peeking through at a couple of the corners. The spine is faded and slightly rolled. There are multiple small splits in the cloth at the ends of the spine. There is a crack in the text block at p. 97, and there is another crack in the text block at p. 113. The text block is still quite sturdy. The pages are yellowed. Dulac was born in Toulouse, France. His artistic talent manifested itself early and drawings exist from his early teens. Many of these early efforts are watercolors, a medium he would prefer through most of his life. Dulac, though capable of pen and ink work, was foremost a painter and used the new technology's ability to reproduce exact tones to let the color hold the shape and define the object.
