About this Item: London: J. M. Dent & Co.; London & New York: M. Dent & Co. & G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1893 & 1895, 1895. 2 volumes, quarto (250 x 202 mm). Publisher's brown crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt in compartments, frames in gilt to covers, wide gilt turn-ins, brown marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, brown silk page markers. Housed in the original marbled paper leather entry slipcases. Spines uniformly lightly faded; an excellent, bright set. Vignette half-titles. Title pages printed in red and brown, historiated chapter initials. Frontispieces and 8 full-page photogravures printed on Japanese silk paper, 32 smaller illustrations in the text, all duplicated in photogravures and printed on Japanese silk paper (except Vol. I, p. 154, as issued), all with tissue guards. First editions, large paper issues, extra-illustrated with additional photogravures. Numbers 140 of 160 copies (of which 100 were for sale in the UK and 50 in the US), and 124 of 125 copies (of which 100 were for sale in the UK and 25 in the US), respectively. Both works are printed on handmade paper and feature the photogravures specially printed on Japanese silk paper (the trade editions featured just five photogravures in each work). Described at the time by the Literary World as "an attractive and handsome gift or prize book" (The Literary World, 1893, p. 431), unusually for a deluxe gift book the volumes were published with uncoloured illustrations, rather than the colour-printed plates usually seen. The text in this edition is taken from Galland's 1821 translation and suitably abridged "virginibus puerisque" (note to contents page). The illustrator, John Dickson Batten's (1860-1932) most well-known achievements were his contributions to various fairy tale books, including a series by the Australian folklorist Joseph Jacobs.
