Moderate shelf/handling wear with cloth flecked on portions of both covers, most prominent on lower half of each, with a few relatively minor soil marks and spots to cloth. Mild rubbing along joints and spine extremities, tiny (1/8") tear to cloth along upper front joint. Text block edges typically toned with minor foxing, with a modest gap between top of binding and spine cloth, with binding firm and intact. Gift inscription dated 1933 on front flyleaf, otherwise unmarked. Front hinge fully intact, rear hinge slightly starting along lower portion but firm. Scattered internal foxing through interior, generally minor/light, ranging in a few instances to moderate, including several of the plates (foxed borders and/or blank versos). Diagonal edge crease to color frontis. Minor silverfishing to lower corners of rear flyleaf and rear pastedown. One leaf (pp. 13-14) had apparently detached and has been re-inserted, with archival document repair tape used to mend both long edges; fore-edge of this leaf shows some chipping and short closed tears, and this leaf shows some foxing and soiling. About this Item: Brentanos, New York, 1916. Condition: Very nearly fine. First edition, American issue, of Clarke's first illustrated book, a stunning Beardsley-esque interpretation of the Danish fairy tales. Lavishly illustrated with 16 color plates mounted on heavy stock, with lettered tissue guards, 24 full page black and white plates plus many decorative tailpieces. The illustrations are magnificent. Identical to British edition except for substitution of the American publisher's name on title. An increasingly scarce book. 11'' x 7.75''. Original grey cloth with black and white oval paste-on surrounded by intricate ornamentation in black. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Illustrated by Clarke with 16 full-page color plates in addition to many black-and-white images. Printed at the Complete Press in England. 320 pages. Spine somewhat toned, else beautiful. About this Item: Brentano's, New York. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Signed Limited. 1916. One of only 125 deluxe copies for England and America, SIGNED by Clarke. Clarke's first illustrated book. The American issue differs from the British issue only in the substitution of the Brentanos name and address for the Harrap name and address on the title page. Illustrated with 16 mounted color plates and decorated head and tail pieces throughout. Publisher's full brown morocco. Spine mellowed to a light brown and with some minor rubbing. Internally fine. The rarest of the three bindings done for this issue (Bowe appendix A). We have never seen another copy offered in leather. Keith Burns has told us that he thinks fewer than 10 copies were bound thus. Signed by Artist. Seller Inventory # 4480
