About this Item: ont> George G. Harrap and Co. Ltd. : London, 1931. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A charming collection of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, brought to life with beautiful illustrations by the renowned book illustrator Harry Clarke. In 1916 George Harrap published this new edition of 'The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen' with specially commissioned illustrations by the then unknown Irish illustrator, Harry Clarke. Whilst Clark had previously been commissioned to provide illustrations for two other works (Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Pope's The Rape of the Lock'), this was the first time his work had appeared in print. The illustrations produced by Clarke for this work made his international reputation as one of the key illustrators during the golden age of gift-book illustration, and began his prolific career as an illustrator. Containing thirty nine plates, fourteen of which are in colour. Collated incomplete, lacking only the coloured frontispiece plate. Condition: In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine, with the odd handling mark to boards. Fading to spine, as usual with this colour binding. Cloth to front joint split, with cloth to backstrip partially lifting. Prior owner's contemporary ink inscription to front free-endpaper, dated '1931'. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but bright and clean, with the odd spot heavier to first and last few pages. Small closed tear and loss to fore edge of pages 206. Overall Condition: Good Only. Seller Inventory # 060489

About this Item: Brentano's, New York, 1916. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Harry Clarke (illustrator). 1st Edition. Undated but probably 1916. No inscriptions. Although text block is clean, firm and bright and all the magnificently lush, Bearsley-esque Harry Clarke illustrations, both b&w and coloured, are present , this book needs little minor restoration: The blue cloth boards are somewhat grubby and have uneven fading. 1 corner has a little bump. Front board is loosened and 1st 2 pages (half-title page and colour frontis) are detached. They have narrow discoloured inside edges (spine side) having once been reattached with tape. The frontis has slightly ruffled fore-edge.The page edges are just a little discoloured and marked. The back free EP is missing. But altogether, well-worth the trouble. Seller Inventory # 005891
